Niantic has shared new details about Pokémon GO's recently announced Trainer Battles feature, which will arrive in late December. Players will soon be able to engage in type-based three-on-three Pokémon battles with friends, close opponents, and leaders of artificial intelligence teams.

Pokémon GO receives the Trainer Battles

To start a battle, coaches can challenge nearby opponents using the new Battle Code invitation system. This is done by looking under the Close tab and then physically scanning your QR code. Players can challenge online friends remotely as long as they have reached Ultra Friendship level or higher. Fighting can also increase your friendship level with other trainers.

AI team leaders are also available for solo battles, which may be a suitable option for younger coaches as Niantic has said that you must be over 13 to participate in coaching battles. Battles are not turn-based, but take place in real time, requiring coaches to use their screens to launch quick attacks that trigger charged attacks. Once a charged ability is complete, tapping it will launch a mini-game, in which trainers will use rhythmic taps on their screen to increase the power of the attack.

The taps' cadence will determine the amount of damage done, increasing the intensity of the battle as players decide whether to block an opponent's next attack with a protective shield. Each trainer only has three available shields per battle. Each coach battle has a time limit of about four minutes, but Niantic has said this may be subject to change depending on player feedback.

Niantic has also confirmed that the Charged Attack group will remain the same during the launch of the Trainer Battle feature, but players can unlock an additional Charged Attack, which can be used in Trainer Battles, Raids, and Gym Battles.

The trainer battles are coming to Pokémon GO later this month and, at the moment, there is no confirmed release date. We know it will be implemented in a style similar to the previous features, starting with level 40 trainers first.
