Lenovo unveiled updated versions of its ThinkStation P720 and ThinkStation P920 workstations on Tuesday. The new machines are based on Intel's second-generation Xeon Scalable processors codenamed Cascade Lake and add support for NVIDIA's latest Quadro RTX 8000 graphics card.

ThinkStation P720 and P920 are the new Lenovo workstations

Lenovo's new ThinkStation P720 and ThinkStation P920 workstations are based on up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores per socket and a frequency up to 4.4 GHz.

The CPUs are paired with up to 384GB and 2TB of DDR4-2933 memory (P720 or P920 respectively), as well as multiple NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 or Quadro GV100 graphics cards. In terms of storage capacities, we are talking about computers that support multiple NVMe / PCIe SSDs (either in M.2 format or in a special PCIe 3.0 x16 Quad M.2 adapter), as well as up to 60 TB of hard drive.

Lenovo places particular emphasis on AI-related workloads that benefit from new hardware. Obviously, the new CPU and GPU will also improve performance in content creation and other applications.

They will be available throughout this month

The new ThinkStation P720 and ThinkStation P920 workstations will be available throughout this May in various configurations, although curiously the Optane versions do not appear in the list. We might get to see variants of Optane some time later.
