Burning problems on OLED panels are no secret, LG Electronics, one of the biggest proponents of this technology, has switched a television based on such a panel on display at a South Korean airport to one based on LCD technology, due to burn problems, thus highlighting once again the biggest problem problem of OLED technology.

LG Electronics Recalls Burnt OLED TV from South Korea Airport and Changes to Non-LCD

The affected OLED television is installed in the Korean Air Miler Club Lounge, in the second terminal of Incheon International Airport. The model in question has shown burn marks just three months after being installed. This television was used to display flight departure times, a very static image that has caused the appearance of a burnt thick white line between the header and the graphics table when changing images.

LG Electronics thought about installing a new OLED TV in its place, but has finally opted for an LCD model instead, several sources point to the company not trusting to solve the burn-in problem if it put another OLED panel. LG installed installed 40 OLED televisions in four lounges in the second terminal lobby earlier this year to promote its new models for this year 2018.

Tests on the panel by TVRTings.com on the burned panel found that uniformity problems were clearly visible after four weeks. LG engineers visited the lab and confirmed that the errors were due to a factory problem, and that some panels were more likely than others to burn. LG has denied the problem, saying its OLED TVs can last without burning 30, 000 hours, or around 10 years with an average daily display of eight hours.
