At the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2018, LITE-ON announced the first EDSFF 1U Solid State Drive (SSD) to emerge from its collaboration with CNEX Labs. The revolutionary push sparked great interest at the summit.

LITE-ON has announced the first EDSFF 1U solid state drive

In collaboration with these partners, LITE-ON offers an innovative and highly efficient storage solution for scalable computing that aligns with Open Compute Project (OCP) specifications. The new EDSFF (Enterprise and Datacenter SSD Form Factor) units will provide a more cost-effective solution for enterprises and large-scale cloud environments.

The new LITE-ON EDSFF solution offers storage density, design flexibility, thermal efficiency, scalable performance, and easy maintenance with front-load hot-swap capability. The hardware design also supports low-latency 3D TLC and low-cost QLC NAND flash, depending on users' specific cloud applications.

Leveraging the CNEX controller's flexible dual-mode interface support, the LITE-ON SSD EDSFF protocol is configurable between traditional NVMe logical block addressing and the upcoming Denali software-defined interface (formerly Open Channel SSD).

LITE-ON SSD EDSSF is designed to provide maximum flexibility for fast-evolving, non-heterogeneous cloud workloads, from high-density artificial intelligence (AI) IOPS and compute-intensive applications to high-nearline storage use cases density. The initial design is compatible with the EDSFF 1U Long Form Factor. Capacity can go up to 80TB with QLC technology.

No date was announced for the launch of the new SSD.
