The Internet Users Association has leaked the draft of the new Royal Decree-Law that arrives to modify the Intellectual Property Law in order to bring back the digital canon to Spain, and this time it will be worse than before.

The digital canon is back

The digital canon was abolished by the Supreme Court but the great evils never disappear and this time it will not be different, the digital canon returns and will affect all users who buy electronic devices capable of reproducing content linked to this tax, such as tablets and smartphones. The new document proposes the imposition of a tax on all devices capable of playing digital content, it is a new tax that manufacturers must pay for each device capable of playing multimedia content. In this way, it is not a tax linked to streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon Video, so they must pay it both if you are going to consume this type of content or if you are never going to do so.

Given the application of the new tax, it is very likely that the prices of smartphones and tablets will be increased for the end user. For now, the new document is in draft status, so it has yet to pass the filter of the European Union, but most likely it will finally be approved and we will see an increase in prices in a few months.
