Carrying laptops as checked baggage may be prohibited

For quite some time there has been a great debate on the subject of bringing laptops on board on the plane. Many users carry them in their hand luggage, while others bet on checking them in. But, in the United States they have long been promoting its ban as checked luggage. Something they are trying to extend to Europe as well.

This proposal is currently being reviewed by the United Nations. Why is it believed to be dangerous? When the battery components reach a high temperature it can pose a risk to passengers. Mainly because if there are other flammable products in the suitcase next to the laptop (spray, cologne, deodorant…) there is a risk of combustion. The United States also considers that bombs can be hidden, something that has already happened on some flights like the one in the photo in Somalia.

In addition to the risk of combustion it is possible that an explosion could occur. A fire in an airplane is something tremendously dangerous, given the limited space and the possibility of evacuation until reaching the ground. For this reason, various companies that are experts in safety have been carrying out tests with aerosols in conditions similar to those of a flight. To check the effects of having a laptop nearby.

Fires occurred, generally small in size, in all tests. Although, there was one case in which an explosion occurred. The good part is that thanks to the protocol against fires it was controlled in about 40 seconds. Therefore, from the United States they are pressing for a change in regulations worldwide.
