How long has it been since you used a phone booth? What's more, how long has it been since you've seen a phone booth and when you find one, it seems abandoned to its fate? Well, this situation begins to change little by little because the cabins of the 21st century have already reached Europe via London. These are kiosks that offer Wi-Fi connectivity, phone calls, connection to charge the mobile and more, completely free of charge.

The cabins of the 21st century

The British capital has become the second city in the world to launch free Wi-Fi kiosks. Thanks to these modern "21st century booths" citizens will be able to connect to the internet at much faster speeds, make phone calls, consult maps and get directions, charge the battery of their mobile device and much more, one hundred percent free of charge.

The first of these cabins has been installed on Camden High Street in London. Under the name "InLinks", this new kiosk (the first of many), is the responsibility of the British Telecom company, a company that last year announced an agreement with the team behind "LinkNYC", a company that already offers more than 900 such positions in New York City.

Like the New York kiosks, it is expected that in the future these facilities will also include air pollution and acoustic sensors, temperature sensors, traffic sensors… The idea is that they will also function as useful environmental monitoring instruments for future construction projects. the so-called "smart city".

Thus, London has just become the second city in the world to install free Wi-Fi booths for citizens. BT has announced that they will expand to more streets and cities before the end of the year. And we hope that the example will spread and soon we can see them also in many more cities around the world.
