Since the release of AMD Radeon Navi cards we have been going through different updates. However, the new AMD Radeon 19.7.3 “Adrenalin” controllers come with a quirky change: fan speeds.

The new AMD Radeon 19.7.3 drivers are here and bring the typical software updates to improve program compatibility and performance. As you can imagine, this new batch of controllers only affects the Navi graphics duo, that is, the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT.

Although it brings several extra changes, the most prominent is the one regarding the operation of its fans at rest.

AMD Navi graphics lacks a shutdown system, so fans are always working. However, before the update both graphics, at rest, were working at around 13 ~ 14% of their power (720 rpm approx.) . However, now in that same state they are able to reach 22 ~ 23% (1150 rpm approx.), Thus reducing the temperature around 3 or 4ºC.

It may seem like a substantial improvement, but we have to take into account that a graph working at 40ºC does not cut its longevity or improve its performance. For this reason, in the end, this change is producing more inconvenience than improvements, since the more revolutions, the more noise is generated.

Whereas before we had about 27.5 dB of noise on average, now the points go up around 2 dB more. For the most sensitive ears, but, above all, for our subconscious something like this can be bothersome in the long term.

A constant sound at medium altitude can cause discomfort, anxiety and even headaches. We don't think AMD charts hit such highs to be that worrying, but of course raising the decibels generated for nothing is not a good idea.

As for cooling that is the only change, so the performance of the fans at full power does not change. This is only relevant for those users with Navi charts and also for day one reviews, which now have slightly inaccurate data.
