How to choose gaming keyboards

It may seem trivial to you, but having a quality peripheral is very important. You are going to live with him a lot of your time and, at least, he should be able to reach the minimums that you demand. Also, you know what they say: cheap is expensive.

K70 RGB MK.2 Mechanical Keyboard Switches

In the market we have an immense quantity of brands, with an enormous quantity of models and a colossal distribution of prices. And with this, "which one should I choose from among all those?" Well, we can't give you a clear answer right now. First you have to know what type of keyboard you are looking for.

To facilitate this, we are going to do a little analysis on three specific profiles of people. Therefore, we will recommend three keyboards of each type and, finally, we will show you which one we think is the best keyboard of all.

  • If you want to cultivate your skill as a recurring or even professional player, you have to be fast and precise above all else. If you are a student or worker, perhaps you will be more interested in it being portable and with great features. Or if you just like to play, but don't have the time or money to do it fully, you may be looking for the best on the quality / price horizon.

Based on these three core ideas, we are going to talk about the best gaming keyboards that we can find on the market. However, before moving on to keyboards, we will comment above on what important things we have set ourselves when selecting peripherals.

Before starting, we advise you that the prices are those we have found on Amazon or official pages. You may find offers on other pages, but we cannot give them as valid since we do not know their trust.

Relevant features of gaming keyboards

Gaming keyboards are peripherals designed with great care and effort. The number of pieces it has inside is quite high, so we have to take several parameters into account when scoring them. Among them we can highlight the extra functionalities, portability and switches.

Extra functionalities

We will start with the details that gaming keyboards can offer us. This point is the least relevant of the trio and depends a lot on your use of the keyboard and your demands as a player, especially.

The extra features are small features that manufacturers offer us. We have a long list of them and we could list some like:

  • Macros keys Multimedia control (forward, pause, backward…) Sound control (normally separate) Special modes (gaming, without windows…) RGB lighting and its software Personalization profiles

The more features we have, the better experience we will have with the device. Clearly, to confirm this, you will have to take advantage of its benefits, since it is worthless to have macros if you do not use them. It would simply be money thrown away.

We also have to look closely at how well the system is implemented, since having it does not directly mean that it is good. If a functionality exists, but is not well implemented, we can directly ignore it. The best example of this is RGB lighting , since a keyboard without a desktop application is really not very customizable.

Portability

Although the term of portability could be included within extra functionalities, we are going to treat it as an individual one. That a device is portable is very important for some users. Thanks to this they can take them to work, to university or even to an external event such as a LAN Party.

Therefore, we will take into account the weight, size and how compact they are for this task. Thus, large keyboards with wasted spaces will lose points, while the best used will earn them. We must emphasize that, in this section, keyboards with TKL format , 75% and others benefit, since they will always be infinitely more portable than the classic ones.

Also, the type of battery, its duration and wireless technology will be key to determine the points that each gaming keyboard will achieve, if they are wireless.

Switches

Kailh switches

The keyboard switches may be the most relevant part that we have to consider. They are the dynamic pieces that transmit the information of our pulsation to the electronic circuit, so it is essential that they be fast, faithful and resistant.

Now we are at an interesting point, as the old mechanical switches are being replaced. Some brands have already taken steps towards different technologies that intend to replace the classic Cherry MX. For example, we have the case of optomechanical switches, which are more reliable and durable, or OmniPoint switches, which allow the customization of the actuation force.

In this section we will assess the variety of switches it has, the durability of these and what their technology offers us compared to the average.

We recommend our article on mechanical keyboard switches.

Gaming top keyboards

The top gaming keyboards are those that give us the best features on the market. They are quite expensive, if we compare it with the most modest and cheapest models that we can buy, but in return they give us the best of the best.

We will take a closer look at some of the new technologies that we have previously talked about and they are a complete surprise in terms of design.

It is clear that companies have not cut themselves when investing in these models, since good quality materials predominate.

3) Corsair K95 RGB Platinum

Corsair K95 RGB Platinum keyboard

In third place we have the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum, probably the top keyboard of the Californian brand. It is a large keyboard with several features that we liked a lot.

We recommend our review of the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum

To start, we have to talk about its construction materials and its body, since it is a keyboard that catches your eye no matter where you see it. It has great RGB lighting throughout the body, which is made of anodized brushed aluminum.

We will have several extra features typical of the medium such as 6 macro keys and some keys for special modes. Among them we can differentiate the blocking mode of Windows and the multimedia controls like the scroll of sound control. Also, we will have 8MB of internal memory to store different profiles, a feature that is becoming increasingly popular.

Some keys like the space bar, the macro buttons and other pieces that we can interchange like "WASD" will have a rough surface to increase its grip. On the other hand, we will have a removable wrist rest that, in addition, we can use in two modes, a more rigid version and a softer one.

The switches that we will have for this keyboard will be the Cherry RGB MX Speed or the RGB MX Brown, two versions for most users. The Speed switches have a high actuation point, therefore the response will be fast, while the Browns will have a remarkable tactile response with each press.

If we consider the data presented by other brands, the switches will have an approximate life expectancy of 50-70 million keystrokes.

Without being the best, we can recommend it without fear, since it is a very good device, wherever we see it.

2) Razer Huntsman Elite

Razer Huntsman Elite keyboard

With the silver medal, we have the Huntsman Elite, a Razer keyboard with the interesting technology of optomechanical switches.

We recommend our review of the Razer Huntsman Elite.

It is a keyboard of standard measures and at first glance it does not stand out for anything concrete (which does not mean that it is ugly). It has very generous lighting throughout the body and multimedia control keys that will help us at certain times. Since they occupy the entire corner, the information LEDs have moved to the top of the arrows.

We lack independent macro keys, however, we can create macros by combining different keys using the brand's desktop software.

The body is in elegant aluminum, but we will also have a quite generous and comfortable rubber wrist rest. We must also emphasize that the keys have a “stabilizer bar”, which makes the circuit activate no matter where on the key we press it.

On the other hand, the lighting of the device is very well achieved having both keys and edges and the multimedia control buttons.

The point that gives relevance to this keyboard are the optomechanical switches. These switches are interesting, since it changes the classic formula of mechanical switches and changes them for a laser sensor. By dispensing with the moving parts, there is no wear, making the parts last longer. Not only that, but laser light also transmits information faster, making responses slightly faster.

The Razer Huntsman Elite is the first of many to bring technology as quirky and natural as this. The marathon for beating the veterans Cherry has already begun and if it were not for the other approach that SteelSeries has presented, it is possible that by pure muscle of switches the Huntsman Elite had taken the gold.

1) SteelSeries Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL

SteelSeries Apex Pro keyboard

The S teelSeries Apex Pro are the new line of keyboards that the Danish brand has presented at Computex 2019 . They are a duet of devices designed to reach the top and we believe that they have earned that title freehand.

Its design is attractive and compact. The serography of the letters is not too striking and the rounded edges give it a very nice look. In addition, as accessories we will have a smooth plastic palm rest. We will have a complete configuration with all the keys and another TKL (without numeric keyboard).

On the other hand, we will have several buttons and button combinations that will serve to control the multimedia, with the OLED screen as the main protagonist. In the upper right corner we have a screen that we can use to show different data and keyboard configurations. We can interact with it through the scroll to its right and various keys.

OLED display of the SteelSeries Apex Pro

However, the most relevant point and for which we have assigned the first place are its OmniPoint switches . These innovative switches are created through an ingenious use of magnetic fields, allowing us to modify when we press and how much energy we need. It seems to us an amazing technology worthy of recognition that, at the moment, has no competition in the market.

We can adjust the keyboard to behave like a Blue or a Red and we can even configure it key by key. In addition, we can ask the device to make the magnetic fields large, making the actuation point incredibly low or smaller at ease.

Overall, the SteelSeries Apex Pro is an important step towards the next paradigm for mechanical keyboards. We hope that the industry continues to move towards new and refreshing ideas like this.

Currently, we can only get this keyboard through the official SteelSeries website, but surely we can get it from other sales portals.

All-terrain gaming keyboards

This section of the top is dedicated to those gaming keyboards capable of operating in any environment. It doesn't matter if you are at home, on a LAN or at a train station, the keyboard will be useful and manageable. In this way, the members of the top will be compact keyboards, with great functionalities and, if possible, of reduced dimensions.

The idea is to make it as functional as possible with the lowest cost to load. Despite the fact that we talk a lot about mobility, any member of this podium will help you to play quietly at home. The only counter point is that this is not its main attraction.

3) Logitech G Pro

Logitech G Pro keyboards

With bronze in hand we have Logitech , the brand specialized in wireless devices. This keyboard has a TKL format that greatly facilitates its use in different places.

Starting with the body, it is slightly larger than other portable keyboards, but the product's minimalist aesthetic quickly solves it. It is made of sturdy plastic, making it a lightweight device designed to be easily carried wherever you want. It has two levels of elevation and a very well-kept rear. However, its greatest asset is the technologies it carries with it.

The Logitech G Pro gaming keyboard features the brand's typical Romer-G tactile switches. They are responsive, agile and satisfactory switches and, on average, offer us a faster response than the Cherry MX. Its life expectancy is approximately 70 million keystrokes.

Also, its TKL format slightly reduces its weight, making it a good adventure companion. Even having this smaller body, the Corsair does not abandon its good habits and we will have 7 buttons to control the multimedia. On the other hand, we will have two centered buttons to activate special keyboard modes.

It has a palm rest with engravings to make slipping more difficult, a feature that is repeated on the space bar. On the other hand, the palm rest is removable, so it will not be a hassle when transporting it. As the last relevant part of the chassis, we will have to talk about the switches, which will be the repeated Cherry MX Red.

Corsair K63 Wireless Cherry MX Red Switches

The battery lasts on average about 15 hours of use, although the company does not specify under what conditions. Furthermore, the device is charged via a microUSB cable on top.

As a whole it seems to us a very good gaming keyboard. Having a TKL keyboard is a slightly different experience and giving us the ability to use it wirelessly opens up many possibilities. And if you don't need it to be wireless, you have the wired version for around € 40 less.

Balanced gaming keyboards

The section on balanced gaming keyboards is quite self-explanatory. They are those keyboards that have a good list of features for lower prices.

They do not usually have the most cutting-edge technologies, nor the most top construction materials, but their balance of quality received in exchange for the price paid is good. These devices we see them very often in the low price ranges since manufacturers need to offer the best to call users.

The next three devices will more than meet the demand for mechanical keyboards from most users.

3) Newskill Hanshi Spectrum

This keyboard comes from the interesting brand Newskill , a company dedicated heart and soul to the manufacture of gaming products. This device represents quite well the mechanical keyboard paradigm of several years ago.

NewSkill Hanshi Spectrum keyboard

Its body is made of brushed aluminum and gives a good feeling of robustness. In the upper right corner it has sound controls, but beyond that it doesn't have any remarkable individual pieces.

We will have keys to control equipment characteristics and to create macros, but they all share a container with the F1-F12 buttons . We will also have a palm rest made entirely of plastic that, as usual, we can remove.

On the other hand, they are the first top keyboards with Kailh Pro mechanical switches . However, the customization is not very wide having only switches in its Red, Brown and Blue aspects . Its approximate life expectancy revolves around 55 million pulsations, not negligible, but slightly below the current average.

The strongest point of this keyboard is its price, since we can get it for a fairly modest price. Kailh Pro switches do n't disappoint and feel good.

2) Logitech G613

At the next spot on this list we have the Logitech G613, a great full wireless keyboard.

Logitech G613 keyboard

We find the combination of a large surface area with a wireless system a bit strange , but more possibilities is always better. This gaming keyboard has numerous functionalities that will make its price deserve.

We can connect it to two devices at the same time (each by one method) and quickly switch between one device and another. Logitech places special emphasis on its Lightning technology, which it says ensures fast wireless speeds without loss.

Despite being wireless, it lacks a battery, however, the company claims to last up to 18 months of use with just 2 AA batteries. Both will be stored in a compartment at the back where we can also store the USB antenna.

Logitech G613 Right Back

On the left side, the 6 dedicated buttons for making macros stand out. In turn, in the upper right corner we will have several keys for multimedia control. At the same time we will have three buttons in the central part to activate the gaming mode, the 2.4GHz Lightning connection and the Bluetooth . Finally, comment that the keyboard is made entirely of plastic.

As a negative point, the keyboard weighs almost 1.5 kilograms and lacks any kind of RGB lighting to increase battery life. The lack of distribution of Spanish keys is also important, but we can fix that by buying a set of stickers that over-write the letters.

Despite the fact that its size and weight are above average, its functionalities more than solve it, which is why we believe that it is a great gaming keyboard for any situation. Of course, we have to comment that, compared to other keyboards of this specific top, the cost of this device is higher.

1) Mars Gaming MK6

Mars Gaming MK6 keyboard

In the golden throne we have the Mars Gaming MK6 keyboard , a very complete keyboard that we can get for a very good price.

We recommend our review of the Mars Gaming MK6.

On its surface it has the appearance of a common mechanical keyboard since it does not stand out in any specific aspect, but it does not fool you. It is made of aluminum and ABS , like most of the keyboards in the list and has a small cable management system to avoid being too cumbersome.

Its RGB lighting is quite good, even protruding from the bottom where we connect the palm rest. The lights can be customized using desktop software and we can store them in profiles for easy storage.

Of course, the design of both the body of the keyboard and the serography of the keys is very good, something that we do not usually see in products in this range. On the other hand, it lacks all kinds of multimedia control key, since these functions are embedded in the F1-F12 buttons .

But the most important part is not its exterior, but its interior. This Mars Gaming keyboard features interesting opto-mechanical switch technology.

As we briefly explained above, these switches exchange physical mechanisms for light detectors. Thanks to this they are more durable, fast and effective. Mars Gaming will have the classic aspects (Red, Brown, Blue).

We think that the choice made by the company is a success since it is offering us a well-designed, attractive keyboard with quality parts. In addition, its price is quite affordable, so there is no doubt that its price / quality balance is excellent.

The best of gaming keyboards

Among all the keyboards that we have seen in this article, the one that we find most interesting is probably the Logitech G613, since it has a good balance in all sections.

When we talk about "best" we are talking about the most recommended among all these gaming keyboards. Obviously the best persé would be the one that gives us the most technology, durability and feel, but the price is also important.

If you look, we can find the cheapest for around 50-60 € , while the most expensive is around 220 € . The Logitech G613 is at a midpoint with an approximate price of € 120.

Also, both linear and tactile Romer-G switches aren't the most advanced these days, but they do appear to be slightly above the Cherry MX . They do not reach the heights of others like the opto-mechanics (which have come a long way) or the new OmniPoint (which have yet to pass the test of time and users), but they are certainly very good at their job.

Finally, it is not particularly small or portable, but it offers us the possibility of taking it to other places thanks to its versatility with a Lightning and / or Bluetooth connection . In addition, its extra features are numerous and are powered by Logitech desktop software .
