As you all know, Microsoft constantly updates Windows and releases security patches on a regular basis. These patches seek to keep the system always safe and protect it from threats and vulnerabilities. Windows 10 and Windows 7 receive patches, although they are usually different, since the dangers are not the same.

Windows 10 patches pose a danger to Windows 7

But recently Microsoft has made an identification failure CVE-2017-8680 that affected Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but not Windows 10. The month of May was when this failure was reported and in September the security patch for Windows was released 10. But, not for Windows 7 and 8.1.

Security breach

The problem with this, in addition to the fact that the affected versions have not received the corresponding patch, is that it is an opportunity for hackers. They can use a technique called diffing with which they compare code to analyze bugs that have been patched in new versions of the software, but not in previous versions. So they locate vulnerabilities that have not been patched.

This flaw makes Windows 7 and Windows 8 users vulnerable to detecting code changes from different versions. So attackers can easily see where the weak points are located. Also, diffing is a very simple process to execute according to various security experts.

These issues can become even bigger when Windows 7 stops receiving security patches in 2020. So thereafter, problems with diffing may increase. We will see if Microsoft offers any solution, at least for the problem with this September patch.
