▷ Best gaming headphones on the market 【2020】?

Table of contents:

Anonim

When we have to choose a PC gaming headset it is a difficult task, it is not the same as when we buy an MP3 player or a smartphone, we usually use the headphones that accompany these products for most tasks, either in front of the computer or on the street.

However, many users are confused when it comes to purchasing one that provides the best quality. With prices that can vary, we have thousands of options to choose from, and the written specifications themselves do little to help evaluate a quality model. But for that we are here, we have taken the liberty of creating a guide as complete as possible with relevant information from them and a list with what, in our opinion, are the best headphones on the market. Do not miss it, because here you will surely find the one you are looking for.

Virtually all manufacturers put the impact information as "Sennheiser" or "AKG" both in their cheap models and in the professional line, which naturally makes us choose the model with the lowest price. After all, if a model is worth 40 euros and another 400 euros, and they have similar characteristics, it is better to carry the cheapest one, right? The truth is that some headphones are cheaper to produce than the packaging itself, and rare are the models that escape this rule. But of course, the price will go in something, it is precisely for that reason, so we must first look at users and opinions, sales and especially our guide to tell you about them.

Index of contents

Headphone types

  • Earbud or earbud: the most common to be found and also the cheapest, usually accompanying smartphones and MP3 players. Much of the sound ends up escaping due to the format of the earpiece, so users commonly increase the volume to almost the limit. Therefore, they are considered the worst model and you will not see any of them here. In-Ear Headphones: They have become quite common recently, including a rod made of silicone to be inserted into the ear canal, automatically eliminating external noise. On average they have higher sound fidelity than earbud headphones, but many users end up being uncomfortable with prolonged use due to staying in the ear. Supra-earphone: considerably larger than the previous two models, precisely because they cover the entire ear, they are generally more comfortable, capable of reproducing sound more faithfully. However, they are heavier. These models have a headband to rest on our head and pavilions approximately the size of our ears. They are frequently used by users of desktop computers or portable music players. Circunmaural: To finish, we have some teams that are a derivation of the previous ones. In this case they are equipment also provided with a headband, but in this case the pad installed in the ear pavilion that completely covers the ears and this is completely inside the pavilions. These devices are widely used by sound professionals and gamers for reproducing audio without noise and having excellent acoustic insulation. In addition, they have larger drivers with good capacity for surround sound, most of the high-end models. They are undoubtedly what we should pay the most attention to.

The last two types that we have seen, have two variants depending on whether your ear is closed or open.

  • Open headphones: These supra-aural headphones have the characteristic that the sound transducer is installed in an open chamber on both sides. That is, the sound that it reproduces is going to come out for the most part from the face located in our ear, but also from the back. This type of headphones will allow us to hear cleaner mid and higher sounds and less forceful bass, with a good balance in the three frequency groups. The negative part of them is that the insulation from outside noise is quite poor, and also the others will be able to hear from outside what is being played. Closed headphones: this type of headphones is characterized in that the driver is installed inside a sealed chamber, either on the outside of the canopy, or on both sides. This will allow us to hear deeper bass and provide greater isolation from outside noise. Sound quality will generally be better than open-bell headphones, although midrange and treble may sound overly canned on low-end models.

Hardly ordinary headphones can play with reasonable fidelity, except for some models that come with MP3 players. The reason? If a manufacturer equips their MP3 player with a poor quality earphone, consumers will end up thinking that the poor quality is from the player. Therefore, in general, they have a quality above average, but not much.

Regular headphones are the best option for those who do not want to invest a lot in a model that will end up in the bottom of the drawer after a few months of use. The same happens with the intra-auricular type: because they are within the ear canal, they can reproduce a wider range of frequencies, even at low volumes, but when they are very cheap, they end up damaging the ear in a short time.

Wired or wireless?

This aspect is also very important to keep in mind when buying headphones, since there are basically two large groups on the market, equipment that works by wireless frequency or by cable.

As a general rule, this only applies to supra-earphones, since the other types are small in size and do not have space for a wireless receiver or battery or battery. As in our guide, almost all of the headphones that we are going to see are of the circummaural type, yes this aspect is important.

Wired

On the one hand, we have the wired headphones. These devices, as is normal, have a wired interface to transmit the sound signal to the transducers it equips. Almost always, the type of interface that these devices mount is the 3.5 or 3-pole Jack connector, this interface is the most advisable by far, since we will be natively using the capabilities of our graphics card and its converter digital-analog.

Instead, there are also those that connect via USB, and this interface is going to be the worst enemy of bad headphones. As we say, a digital to analog converter (DAC) is necessary for the sound to reach the speakers. If we use a USB interface, we are canceling the capabilities of our sound card, since it will be the USB receiver itself that has this digital-analog converter, which, in almost no case, will exceed that of our sound card. Therefore, the USB interface must mount a good performance DAC card.

Within this wired range, we can find equipment with two cables, one for the microphone and one for sound, which is the most general, and most compatible with desktops and sound cards. On the other hand, we also have a 4-pole 3.5 mm Jack earphone that has both micro and audio in the same cable, we will know them well because they are the ones we use for Smartphone. It is not, in any case, normal in headband-type equipment, but they also exist.

Wireless

On the other hand, there are the wireless headphones, which do not need a cable to capture and reproduce the sound of our equipment. The most widely used technologies for this type of case is radio frequency, generally working at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. These devices have a receiver that will be connected to a USB port and will be in charge of transmitting or receiving the sound of the headphones. The range is around 10 or 15 meters maximum and the sound is of considerable quality in high-cost equipment.

But we also have other technologies such as infrared, for lower cost equipment and with a really poor quality, and through Bluetooth, which provides very similar characteristics to radio frequency, both in quality and coverage. The good thing about these headsets is that they are compatible with all devices that have Bluetooth installed, such as laptops or Smartphone.

The main disadvantage of them is that they reduce the quality of the sound and introduce latency in the signal, especially the further away we are from the receiver. This last aspect in the high-end models is quite optimized the issue of latency and we will practically not notice if it is a wired or wireless equipment. In addition, another problem is that they will need batteries or a battery to function, so we will be limited in the time of use if they do not have a cable interface.

Another problem with wireless headsets is that they are precisely connected to a receiver with a USB interface, so the digital-to-analog converter is also integrated into them. Wired peripherals will ALWAYS perform better for gaming than wireless peripherals, be it a headset, a mouse, or a keyboard.

Is the brand important?

Many people associate the quality of the company that makes a certain product, and that is the most reasonable thing when we talk about headphones. Hardly a company that makes cheap models will risk in the high-performance market, since disgruntled users with their cheap headphones will hardly invest 10 or even 100 times more in another that is sold to the professional public. The opposite is also true. Companies like Bose, Sennheiser and Philips will not risk their good reputation as music experts, marketing poor quality models.

We must always put in context the equipment and the price range that we want to find. But if we want something really good, it is normal to go to the brands that have the most experience in the construction of these products, because we will know that we will have at least 90% of success in the purchase.

The truth of surround sound from a gaming headset

Surround sound, or "surround" in English, consists of improving the quality of sound reproduction by adding additional channels. These channels are basically more speakers that will be distributed in the person's listening space. The idea is to place a certain number of speakers around the listener, which will be connected to independent channels to generate a 360-degree sound radius. Well, this would be a real surround, with a physical 5.1 (5 speakers with mids and treble and a subwoofer) or 7.2 or whatever.

What happens in gaming headphones is very different from reality. In them we almost never have 5 physical speakers and a subwoofer tucked into the canopy, there is only one speaker, one only on each side. Through software, the sound that reaches these speakers is modified and a series of echoes and effects are added to create the feeling that we are in an enveloping environment. Everything is digital effects, the sound source is not physically like that, even when a movie has 7.1 sound, it is played natively in our headset, first it goes through software to emulate this 7.1.

If we translate this into a game, where we need maximum precision to guide us through the sound, emulating a surround and adding non-existent echoes to the audio output, can considerably distort the real sound of the game and worsen the gaming experience.. Therefore, the surround sound of a headset is NOT real, it is emulated.

Although it is true that when we activate this surround option, we notice a deeper sound, with the feeling of having a true 7.1 and it is very good, because everything is heard better with the effects it adds, but when playing friends, Be careful with having this digital effects activated. The positive of all this is that we can almost always activate or deactivate it whenever we want from the headphones software.

Some technical concepts

  • Sensitivity: Sensitivity is the response of the headphones to the input signal. It is measured in dB / mW or decibels per milliwatt, or what is the same how many decibels will a speaker emit for each milliwatt of power that reaches it. The more sensitivity an earphone has, the higher the volume we can reach with the same input signal. Generally, the maximum sensitivity is around 100 or 110 dB. With sensitivities of 80 dB upwards, our hearing will suffer a lot, and above 140 dB it would be in danger of bursting. Impedance: expressed in units of electrical resistivity, Ohms (Ω). The impedance is basically the opposition that the speakers present to the passage of the sound signal. For this reason it is related to the volume of the music. The lower the impedance, the greater the sound volume, that is, the greater the power. The normal thing is to find headphones with an impedance of 16, 24 or 32 Ω, although this measurement will vary depending on the frequency range. Frequency range: a sound is an electromagnetic wave that has a certain frequency. The lower the sound played, the lower the frequency of the wave, and the higher the wave, the higher the wave. So, the frequency range of headphones is from what frequency they start to sound and to what they are capable of reaching. The human ear can hear approximately frequencies between 20 Hz and 20 kHz, and at least this must be the frequency range of our headphones, so we can hear everything. As a curiosity, our canine friends can hear from 20 to 65 kHz much more than us, without a doubt. Frequency response : Frequency response is basically the sound power delivered by headphones at certain frequencies, within the range we have seen previously. There are, so to speak, three groups of frequencies, the bass, the mid and the treble. The response of a speaker can vary according to the frequency, being able to reproduce stronger bass and softer treble. For a device to be considered high fidelity or Hi-Fi, this frequency response must be approximately in the audible range, in this way all the sounds we hear will be at the same level and the quality will be better. So, the more frequency lame, the better equipment it will be. Connector: although it does not greatly influence the sound quality itself, it is important to consider whether it is compatible with the equipment with which it will be used. What we know as "common input" is the 3.5mm P2, and 3.5mm P3 model for headphones equipped with a microphone.

Other factors such as comfort and aesthetics also deserve special attention, because what is the use of having a model that reproduces all sounds perfectly if it is not comfortable or we do not like the appearance.

Asus returns to the fray in 2019 with two new generation headsets, the ROG Delta and a more decaffeinated Delta Core version also highly recommended. We focus on the main model, which comes with an integrated Quad ESS ES9218 SABER DAC just like the one used by high-end motherboards. With it and USB connectivity we ensure impeccable sound quality as demonstrated in our review.

The design has been simplified compared to the ROG Strix for example, now with greater ergonomics by allowing the pavilions to rotate and with a well-padded and adjusted simple bridge headband. It integrates AURA Sync lighting on both sides and includes a pair of fabric pads ideal for summer.

It has very large pavilions and huge round pads to offer us an isolation typical of the great models on the market. This is completed by a chassis with a self - adjusting double bridge steel headband.

Unlike the GH70 model, in this case we do have a 3.5mm Jack connector that will delight the most demanding users. The sound profile is very nice, with powerful bass, but at no time outshining mids and highs, making it ideal for both music and games.

The microphone perfectly fulfills its mission, giving us good sound quality for gaming. In this case we will not have a backup software to modify parameters, since the connection is entirely in 3.5 mm Jack, but who needs it.

A team with a very futuristic design based on a simple bridge headband and all the sound controls located in the ear pavilion. It also has two RGB LED lighting zones that can be customized separately with the brand's software.

Another of the most interesting features they have is that we have three keys in the pavilion, to load custom sound profiles and quickly access them from them. All this can be done through Logitech Gaming Software

Looking more at the technical characteristics of these headphones, we have a double connectivity, both by USB and by 2.5 mm Jack, something that has undoubtedly contributed to the success of sales of this peripheral. With the Jack we will have a natural sound in stereo and with the USB we can activate the surround option with virtual Dolby 7.1 technology.

The microphone is also not turkey mucus, as it has a very high frequency response from 100 to 20, 000 Hz to clearly and fully capture all our tantrums in the Counter.

Razer Kraken Tournement Edition are very good looking headphones and gaming with stereo sound. In this case we do not have a self-adjusting headband, although without it, they are also very comfortable, with large pads and good soundproofing.

One of the peculiarities is that it brings a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) in case we want to connect it between the USB port and the 3.5mm Jack that it has natively. This will allow us to be compatible with much more devices.

As a trend in the house, these headphones have very powerful bass, although in this case they are better adjusted than in other models to obtain a good balance with mid and treble. The microphone is the weakest aspect of this team, although it does its job if we are not too demanding.

At the beginning of the year, Logitech released the update for its G933 Artemis Spectrum wireless headphones and left us with a very good taste in our mouths. In terms of design, we have a very similar set, with oval pavilions and fairly thick pads, and a simple bridge configuration for better placement. Its grips allow to rotate the pavilions, and in one of them we have stored the USB receiver for the PC.

In addition to its 2.4 GHz wireless frequency connection without latency, we can also connect them using a 3.5 mm jack. Its Pro G transducers have been improved in quality, offering DTS Headphone: X 2.0 technology and virtual 7.1 surround sound. The Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 headphones offer us versatile connectivity, thanks to the inclusion of a USB 2.0 connector and Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology to provide compatibility with all equipment, both consoles and PCs. In addition, we have installed special pads covered in natural leather, to achieve the best wearing comfort and great insulation, something very necessary in quite noisy environments. Of course they have Asus Aura RGB LED lighting customizable through the corresponding brand software.

We could miss a 3.5 mm Jack connector, but the truth is that its high-fidelity digital-to-analog converter ESS 9018, a 9601 amplifier, exclusive hermetic camera and Asus Essence 50 mm speakers offer us spectacular sound, we give faith of it in our review. This is a combination that promises to offer 24-bit and 96 KHz sound without distortion, so the experience will be excellent both in games and music.

Razer Nari Ultimate is the latest version of the Razer brand top of the range wireless headset. It has 50mm neodymium speakers with THX Spatial Audio and Razer Hypersense technology, which gives us a more realistic feeling in explosions and blows with two small motors with vibration. Especially in the bass section they are very good headphones, although as a sign of the brand, somewhat excessive.

This set features a self-adjusting headband and cooling gel pads. Connectivity is wireless using 2.4 GHz radio frequency. The only point that lags a bit is in the performance of the microphone, since it has a somewhat reduced response range.

If we do not want to spend the extra money on this Ultimate version, we also have the Razer Nari Wireless slightly cheaper and with similar features.
