- Final words on the best RAM memory
RAM is undoubtedly one of the critical and most important components of our equipment. And it is precisely for this reason that the first recommendation is to improve this important element. But of course, improving RAM memory will possibly have secondary consequences, especially if we have an old computer.
This is because the technology is advanced and new models come out that are only supported by recent motherboards and perhaps for this reason, you will also be interested in updating more hardware such as the CPU or Motherboard of your equipment. We've put together this guide to the best RAM on the market for desktops and laptops. You will surely find yours here!
But before seeing the list of models, we see it appropriate and recommended that you know a little about how RAM works and that we must take into account to choose the right one. Without further ado, let's begin.

What is RAM
Technology over the years has reached an unimaginable advance; the home computer since its inception has developed a number of improvements that have made us totally dependent on them today; since, from our social life to our working life, it is developed according to him, because they facilitate daily tasks and the resources we need to obtain concrete results. One of the most important parts of the computer is its RAM memory, since its capacity depends on it.
The computer is a machine that is responsible for receiving and processing data, in turn this data is converted into information that can be used and is useful depending on what we need it for.
RAM stands for Random Access Memory . It is that memory of the computer, as its name says, which can be accessed randomly, that is, it is not necessary to access the preceding bytes. To be more specific, it can be read and written to one memory location with the same timeout for any other location, and is typically the type of memory used in most computers and other device types. It is the main memory and is the one that the programs have available to handle.
You can also see interesting information from these guides that we have prepared:
The function of RAM memory is to load all the instructions that are executed in the processor. These instructions come from the operating system, input and output devices, hard drives and everything that is installed on the computer.
In the RAM memory all the data and instructions of the programs that are running are stored, these are sent from the storage units before their execution. In this way we can have available all the programs we run, if you hardly wait.
If RAM does not exist, the instructions should be taken directly from the hard drives and these are much slower than this random access memory, making it a critical component in the performance of a computer.
It is called random access memory because it can be read and written to any of its memory locations without having to respect a sequential order for its access. This allows practically no waiting intervals for access to information.
How RAM works
There are currently two types of this memory, one of them is dynamic RAM, abbreviated as DRAM, and the other would be static memory, known as SRAM memory. These types of memories are only differentiated by the type of technology they use to store the data stored in them; the most popular of both being dynamic memory.
Dynamic memory bears this name, motivated by the fact that it needs to be updated thousands of times in a second, and static memory does not require it, making it faster and therefore much more expensive. It is also important to note that the data stored in memory will only be available until the computer is turned off or restarted.
This memory performs the same function as floppy disks, hard drives, or DVDs. But it is much more profitable because its content is volatile and much more functional, allowing devices to not become congested, and thus work in a more agile and comfortable way.
RAM is where all the instructions made by the processor and some other units of the computer are loaded. Its physical composition is formed by a set of chips connected to the motherboard, these chips are black rectangles that are generally soldered in small groups to some plates. This helps the processor to access it much faster than the rest of the storage media.
A great benefit obtained with this memory is that if the electricity is cut at the time it is used or a document is being worked on and the changes made to the computer's hard disk have not been saved, these will be automatically lost. changes that were made; since these changes were only stored in memory. And because of this it is of great importance to save the changes as they are made and not wait for them to be done.
Despite the fact that memory can be very useful because some applications can run with little memory available, at the same time it gets in the way and severely damages the operation of the computer, because it slows down the computer.
It is essential to know how to choose a good computer, and deciding on the RAM it should have is essential. Therefore it is recommended that the device have a memory greater than 8GB, since with this amount of memory we can manage the operating system and heavy applications without any problem. As professionals we will need more.
We recommend that you take a look at our gaming / advanced pc, enthusiasts and basic pc settings.
Types of RAM DIMM interface
As is the case with all memory technology leaps, in the short term the performance leap is small, very small. In fact it is not difficult to see DDR3 kits that perform better than other DDR4s due to their lower latencies. Also, memory bandwidth is often not a limitation for regular desktop users, so any gains that may have taken are long to become apparent. But do not panic , although it seems a very small leap in terms of technological evolution, the same thing happened with the change from DDR2 to DDR3, and of course from DDR to DDR2. Am I the only one who remembers memories with CL2 latencies?
The DDR3 memory has the 240-pin DIMM type encapsulation working at 1.5 V but the clock frequency goes up to 2666 MHz. The capacity per memory module is up to 16 GB. As in the technology leap, these DDR3 are memories with a higher latency than previous DDR2, and are not compatible in installation with previous versions.
It is something that we will have to get used to, since DDR4 is here to stay: Intel's enthusiastic platform, corresponding to the X99 chipset, only supports DDR4, and it is to be expected that future generations of processors will follow the same path, not in vain we go straight to a generation of 7nm CPUs both in the Intel and AMD companies already announced. This practically mandatory leap in technology is not at all new, since AMD already made the same move at the time, supporting DDR2 and DDR3 memories with its second-generation Phenom.
As with the previous generation jumps, the DDR4 memories have a substantial improvement in terms of clock frequency, being possible to reach 4400 MHz. Although they have a higher latency than the previous ones and are incompatible with the expansion slots for previous technologies. DDR4 memories mount 288-pin modules working at 1.2V
As usual with new generation technologies, the price was prohibitive to exit, but it has been gradually decreasing to values similar to DDR3 memory, this is the law of life.

SO-DIMM Memories for Laptops
With performance and electrical specifications similar to those of its desktop sisters, we have the SO-DIMM form factor for notebooks and compact, low-power devices. It is a common format in all laptops that do not have the memory soldered on the board, as well as in Intel Nuc, Macbook, iMac and Mac Mini barebones that use SO-DIMM memories. The most common standards in this field are, on the one hand, DDR3L memories, which work at 1.35V instead of the usual 1.5. Which have been almost mandatory for a few years (since haswell, 4th generation, intel does not support standard DDR3 memory in its portable processors). In teams of the sixth generation onwards, it is common to see DDR4, working at 1.2V in this case, and higher frequencies of up to 2400 MHz, although there is also a manufacturer that has opted for DDR3L. Their prices are almost always quite cheap, in some cases surprisingly more than in the desktop models, but we must take into account their technical specifications for compatibility with our system, especially the voltage.
We recommend reading the best current gaming notebook.
Although it is common for many laptops to mount a single module for cost savings and a very slight saving in consumption, in terms of performance, it is recommended, as in the desktop, to mount the modules in pairs, to take advantage of the dual channel.
RAM memory features: speed, latency, voltage and overclocking.
Memory is a rather difficult component to buy compared to other pieces, since we have three parameters to look at at the beginning: Frequency, latencies and voltage. The three are closely related, since as a general rule, in chips of the same quality, increasing the frequency implies worsening the latencies and vice versa. The voltage is a necessary evil, the lower equal to the rest of the values, the better, we will make the memory controller suffer less, we will have a tad lower consumption, and to top it off we gain margin to rise in case of overclocking.
As we see in this image we have divided the characteristics sticker into 5 sections:
- It is the type of memory, in this case DDR4. The memory capacity. In this case it indicates that the pack is made up of 16GB in 4 4GB modules. It is the speed of memory. This module has 2666 MHz. It is the latency with a C15: 15-17-17-35. The memory voltage, being DDR4 we already see memories with 1.20V.
Latencies are usually presented in the form XXX-XX. To see the meaning we will see it with an example. For example, for any memory we can find it with 15-15-15-30
Field | Example value | Description |
CAS latency (CL) | fifteen | They are the clock cycles since a column address is sent to memory and the start of the data that is stored in it. It is the time it takes to read the first memory bit of a RAM with the correct row already open. |
Row Address to Column Address Delay (T RCD) | fifteen | The number of clock cycles required since a memory row is opened and the columns within it are accessed. The time to read the first bit of a memory without an active row is CL + TRCD. |
Row Precharge Time (T RP) | fifteen | The number of clock cycles required since sending a preload command and opening the next row. The time to read the first bit of a memory if a different row is open is CL + TRCD + TRP |
Row Active Time (T RAS) | 30 | The number of clock cycles required between a row trigger command and the sending of the preload command. This is the time it takes to internally refresh a row, overlapping with TRCD. In SDRAM modules (Syncronous Dynamic RAM, the usual) this value is simply CL + TRCD. Otherwise, it is approximately equal to (2 * CL) + TRCD. |
A very common question that you ask us is: What should we pay more attention to then? The answer is in everything: frequencies and latencies. Emphasizing the first latency (CAS) which is usually the most noticeable. Depending on the benchmark, "slow" memories with very tight latencies may be more interesting, or conversely, very fast memories, although the latencies are somewhat more relaxed. As a comparison parameter, it is usually interesting to calculate the effective latency, since when measured in clock cycles, what appears at first glance to be worse latency may actually be higher. Let's see next how to pass a clock cycle latency to nanoseconds.
Going back to the example from before, we have a kit working at 2133MT / s, with a CAS latency of 15 clock cycles. How much is that?
For advanced users, who are going to render, edit images at high resolutions, or who usually have several heavy virtual machines open, the only limit is the pocket and the maximum memory supported by the platform.

If what we want is performance excellence for our AMD or Intel platform, one of the best RAM memory manufactured by G-Skill is this Royal. In the Royal Gold model, we have the now defunct Samsung B-die chip, one of the best performance, overclocking stability and performance it offers. Due to the evolution of the modules, it is no longer manufactured, and has been replaced by the A-die and D-die, but today having one of these will be lucky for its user. For its part in the "normal" Royals we have B-die chips but from Hynix.
In addition, its aesthetics is groundbreaking, with metallic heatsinks chromed in gold or platinum and full of lighting in an excellent finish. It is one of the most used by us for the test bench, so it must be in a designated place on our list. You will have all the extra information in our review of the G.Skill Trindent Z Royal.

Next on the list, and very recently released are other Trindent-Zs, in this case NEOs that are optimized for AMD Ryzen and AMD's AM4 platform. In them we again have a SK Hynix chip available at frequencies from 2666 MHz to 4000 MHz. AMD always recommend placing frequencies up to 3600 MHz in your Ryzen 3000, for architectural reasons of its Infinity Fabric, keep that in mind.
The design is a continuation of the Trindet-Z series, made of aluminum and in this case a more elegant and less aggressive lighting than the Royal ones. They do not reach their level in performance, but they are very close to it and at a better price. You will have all the extra information in our review of the G.Skill Trindent Z RGB NEO

Although it is true that most of them already have good hardware components, we can still squeeze more. On the other hand, if our team is not intended for gaming, the best thing will be to buy the modules that we see are more affordable.
