If you are looking for a large sector of your home to be used for entertainment, you are faced with the need to look for the best projectors on the market so that your experience is unique and of quality. Whether you want to project Blu-ray movies onto a wide, white wall, maximize the gaming experience, or expose slides or photos from a mobile device to a larger 100-inch screen, a home theater projector has to be between your first screen choices and you're a multimedia content enthusiast.

Index of contents

Projectors range from budget HDs to cinema-grade 4K Ultra HD models, which are surprisingly cheap. Fortunately, the days when projectors offered blurry quality are long gone.

To go to the movies every day, buy yourself a projector

With HD now ubiquitous, you can get great results with 1080p resolution. And as more Ultra HD content becomes available through streamers like the Nvidia Shield and the new Amazon Fire TV, as well as the upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray revolution, the future looks great.

Contemporary models can accept a wide variety of multimedia content (photos, movies, games and documents) very effectively, and many are also capable of playing music files. Although models with resolutions of 720p or less are still being introduced, higher resolutions (from WXGA to FHD) are common, and we're even seeing some 4K versions, with horizontal resolutions of nearly 4, 000 pixels. Undoubtedly, high-level performance.

Projectors designed for home use vary widely in price, features, purpose, and capabilities. We will see how to determine which type of home projector is best for you. With increasingly affordable prices, you don't need to spend a fortune to get that big screen experience. Here is a short guide to what to consider when choosing a movie projector.

Types of projector technology

When purchasing a projector, there are three main technologies to choose from: LCD, LCoS, DLP, and LED.

LCD

LCD projectors use liquid crystal display technology, as the name suggests. A light source is divided into three wavelengths, or three glass panels: red, green, and blue. Each wavelength of light passes through an LCD screen, before being combined into a prism and projected. Color saturation and brightness is decent with these projectors. However, black levels are not always the best, and you can sometimes see the "screen door" effect, where individual pixels are highlighted. Its advantages and disadvantages may be the following:

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

They are the cheapest equipment Durability is less than in other technologies
Color saturation and brightness are very good Image quality is degrading and pixels are dying

Its image is sharp and powerful

They require maintenance of their filter
Blacks are not deep although the image may be pixelated

DLP

Most DLP projectors use a single digital micro-mirror device, or DMD, inside. These have one mirror per pixel, that is, we would have more than two million mirrors. The projector can tilt the mirror to turn the light on or off; shades of gray are achieved by turning a pixel on and off in quick succession. For its part, color is made by making a complete frame shine through a color wheel that rotates in the front; A color image is made up of layers of red, green, and blue images. The light source is usually LED or lamp type.

DLP projectors can be super small and offer great black performance. The downside is that the contrast ratios have not improved significantly, and the color wheel can create the "rainbow effect" where flashes of color can be seen in each frame. The upper projectors have dynamic irises that automatically adjust the amount of light emitted. This allows the projector to make adjustments to the image being transmitted, reducing light for detail in dark scenes and maximizing brightness and detail in bright scenes. Let us now summarize a few advantages and disadvantages:

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

Blacks are deep and the image very smooth Not as bright as LCD technology
Light output is correct thanks to individual mirrors May produce rainbow effect due to color wheel with fixed iris

They have high contrast ratio and vivid colors

The number of pixels is limited in the number of mirrors that the chip has
They are easy to maintain and small in size

LCoS

Silicon Liquid Crystal Projectors (LCoS) work similarly to LCD projectors. The main difference is that the LCDs used by the LCoS projectors are mounted on a reflective, rather than transmissive, surface. These projectors offer better black levels, higher contrast, and less visible pixel structures. This is the best projector technology you can buy, but you will have to pay a lot more. Some companies have their own names to designate LCoS projectors. In Sony projectors, the 4K Sony VPL-VW550ES calls this technology Silicon X Reflective Display (SXRD). The advantages and disadvantages of these teams are:

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

Black level is very good They are more expensive than LCDs and DLPs
They offer great brightness and smoothness in the image It is not used too much precisely because of the cost

Bring together the best of DLP and LCD technology

The final appearance is smoother without the pixels being noticed
Very good contrast

LED

This technology was developed to respond to the degradation problem of traditional projector lamps, especially LCDs. The light source used is of LED origin, with diodes of this type, amplifying the luminosity through a lens. They are generally very compact devices and the use of mercury is eliminated, so they are more environmentally friendly and more efficient devices. These are its advantages and disadvantages:

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

High durability, we speak of more than 20, 000 hours They are very sensitive to voltage and intensity
There is no need for maintenance because it does not have filters Its cost is high

Instantaneous on and off and no heat release

Final image in colder colors due to the white image of the LEDs
They are small Less brightness power and trouble accurately representing point light sources

Content you will see on the projector

There are currently four standard types of content that you can view using a projector: video, data, games, and photos. Most projectors are capable of working with all of them, but each type of projector has its strengths and weaknesses. This is why, when buying a projector, we must read its description and see which is the land where it works best.

Business (or data) projectors are known for being the best for displaying data presentations, such as PowerPoint slides, Excel files, PDFs, and the like.

Consumer or home models for entertainment and home theater are more geared toward video viewing. Projectors that do a good job with videos also tend to be good with photos.

Video game projectors are a small, but constantly developing, niche with less input lag.

Many home projectors are versatile, capable of projecting a wide variety of content. In the event that you have a home office and occasionally need to do data presentation, but at the same time you also want to use the projector for hours of entertainment, you may want to get a home model that also performs well when displaying the data.

The Importance of Projection Alignment

It is not easy to align a projector with a wall and get a square image, so the level of image control offered is important. All projectors are capable of adjusting digital keystone to help obtain a square image, but this reduces resolution. Lens Shift is superior technology; here the projector is aligned to obtain a square image, and then the image is physically moved using the lens.

In any case, it would be better for us to spend several minutes making a projector placement as correct as possible. We could even use some gadget to measure the imbalance and distance, and thus have a perfect native position.

Projection ratio (projection factor)

The projection ratio is an important statistic, as it indicates the size of the screen that can be projected and at what distance.

Short throw projectors, which can project large images up close, are a good choice if you want a projector that will only occasionally be installed on a table. The BenQ TH530 is a good example.

For models permanently installed on the ceiling, the projection ratio is less problematic. However, check that the chosen screen size can be filled from the installation distance, otherwise you will have to do extra DIY to reposition it.

Projector Resolution

Ideally, the native resolution of the projector (the number of pixels on your screen) matches the resolution of the content you'll see most often. If you want the latest in home entertainment, you'll want a 4K projector, but the outlay is more.

For games and videos, you will need a native widescreen aspect ratio such as 16: 9 or 16:10. Both 720p (1280 × 720 pixels) and 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels) have 16: 9 aspect ratios, while WXGA (1280 × 800) projectors have a 16:10 aspect ratio. Home theater projectors are better at 1080p resolutions, however, many users feel comfortable with the less expensive 720p models.

If you have a higher level of demand, you would have to take into account a 4K projector (also called Ultra High Definition) with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, twice as many vertical and horizontal pixels as 1080p. However, there is currently a fairly limited amount of content that can take advantage of 4K resolution. So, it's not worth it too much, unless we want to play on a “movie screen”.

Projector with HDR support

Do you need HDR support? The latest projector models support it, although it's hard to find a model that's bright enough to get the most out of it. For this we would have to go to high-end equipment with high resolution, something that is not too advisable from the point of view of cost.

Portability is also important

A home projector doesn't have to be just homey. Many are portable enough to travel with them, or at least to easily move from one room to another.

The main exception is a movie projector, which you probably want to permanently install. Game projectors are easy to carry to a LAN party. Microprojectors, most of which can fit in a shirt pocket, are highly portable, and come in both home and professional models (many are good for personal and business use).

Brightness

Home projectors range in brightness from less than 100 to several thousand lumens for video and entertainment models.

The brightness of the projector depends largely on two factors: image size and lighting. If you agree with relatively small images and / or plan to project most of the time in a dimly lit room, you can cope with less brightness. A home entertainment projector for a family room should be brighter, with approximately 2, 000 lumens or more.

Remember that the perception of brightness is measured logarithmically; It takes much more than doubling the number of lumens for an image to appear twice as bright. In summary, the modest differences in nominal brightness (say 2, 200 and 2, 500 lumens) are generally of little consequence.

Connection methods

Almost all home projectors offer many connection methods. A lot of the new models provide HDMI connectivity, which is good because it supports 1080p video resolutions.

Larger projectors have standard HDMI ports, while handheld projectors and other small projectors often have mini or micro HDMI ports, which require different cables (usually included in the product box).

Several projector models have HDMI 1.4a compatible ports, an option that makes it possible to project from a Blu-ray player or decoder, as well as a computer.

Many others include HDMI ports that support MHL, providing a wired connection to compatible phones and tablets. Some projectors connect via Wi-Fi, and may support streaming through Miracast.

Composite video, component video and S-Video are also common, and projectors that can be connected directly to a computer via a USB cable are increasingly seen.

VGA ports are present in most projectors, although HDMI is preferred for projecting video from your computer. Many models now offer Wi-Fi adapters for wireless content streaming as an optional or standard feature.

Do you need 3D?

As 3D has grown in popularity for video and game content, many new projectors feature 3D compatibility. Most use TI's DLP-Link technology, which requires a computer with a compatible graphics card and active shutter 3D glasses for each user.

However, they are not compatible with all 3D content. Knowing this, you should check what the manufacturer claims in the specifications about compatibility if the 3D content is of importance to you. Do not forget to take into account the cost of 3D glasses when buying such a projector.

Better projectors with Full HD resolution

In this list we are going to see the best projectors with Full HD resolution, with these devices we will be able to enjoy movies and games at the native resolution of the vast majority of screens on the market. These equipments present a medium / high cost. But if you are a big movie fan and want something of quality in your home, the Full HD options we believe are the most advisable today.

Viewsonic knows how to make good and cheap projectors, this PX747-4K model costs less than 1000 euros and has sensational features. It is a projector with native 4K resolution, XPR technology and 3, 500 ANSI lumens, more than we will see in many of the models on this list. In addition, it is compatible with HDR and also at a very good level thanks to its DC3 technology. Its contrast ratio in SuperEco mode is 12, 000: 1, so it is to be interpreted that in brightness mode it will be much higher, although it is not specified by the manufacturer.

We have the brand's SuperColor technology for improved saturation and color definition, and the lamp life isn't too shabby with up to 15, 000 hours of service in SuperEco mode. For connectivity, the brand has installed two HDMI 2.0 ports with HDCP 2.2, VGA port, two 3.5 mm Jack for audio in / out, RS-232, USB Type-A output and a Mini USB for service. We miss a USB Type-C or Type-A to stream content from portable drives, but HDMI will fill this gap.

This equipment is intended for professional use to represent boards of enormous size and resolution, but also to represent multimedia content at a resolution of 2340 × 2160 native. The projection technology of this projector is also DLP with a 120Hz vertical sync and 135Hz horizontal sync. The color range of this lamp is 30 bits (1.07 billion colors) with a contrast ratio of no less than 900, 000: 1.

With this projector we can project as if we were on a 300-inch screen or what is the same, 7.62 meters diagonal. Of course we would need an impressive enough room to reach this measure. Despite this, it is a very quiet projector, only 26 dB, although of considerable size weighing no less than 5 and a half kilos.

  • Resolution: 3840x2160p 120Hz 16: 9. Projection distance: from 1.3 to 9.3 meters. Two 5 W stereo speakers and includes remote control. Optional accessories for Wi-Fi connectivity.

This Optoma UHD60 projector is another of the best options we have on this list, with native 4K resolution, HDR compatible and Rec. 709 HDTV certified. This is one of the best projectors that Optoma has in terms of quality / price, since the performance and image quality it shows is very good with DLP display technology and its 1, 000, 000: 1 contrast ratio. This time the optical zoom is again 1.6x manual and the maximum size of the projection screen to ensure good quality will be 308 inches in 16: 9 format, as is normal.

We do not consider it to be a very suitable device for games, since its input Lag is 33 milliseconds, but it will go wonderfully in the reproduction of movies and 4K content. The connectivity of this equipment has also been improved with an S / PDIF audio output, in addition to an RJ45, the two classic HDMI 2.0, VGA connector and two 3.5mm Jack for audio input and output.

We now turn to see this Epson EH-TW9300, a projector with native 4K resolution that features 3LCD technology or triple chip LCD. The image quality of this technology is excellent and we also have a contrast ratio of 1, 000, 000: 1, something spectacular for a projector. The adaptation system of this projector is also very high, up to 96.3% in the vertical axis and 47.1% in the horizontal axis. In this case we have a 2.1x motorized optical zoom operated by remote control.

We must bear in mind that, because it uses LCD technology, the durability of the lamp will be less than in other equipment, specifically about 5000 hours. This Epson is also compatible with 3D playback devices, and has very good connectivity with USB 2.0, RS-232C, VGA, two HDMI and also a Gigabit LAN Ethernet connector. This equipment is not exactly portable, since its dimensions and weight are very considerable, no less than 11 Kg.

  • Resolution: 3840x2160p 240Hz 16: 9. Projection distance: from 3 to 6.3 meters. Gigabit ethernet connector. Optional accessories for Wi-Fi connectivity.

Pros:

  • Very high contrast ratio. 2.1x motorized optical zoom. Great HDR quality and very good whites. Great color depth, so the image quality will be very good. It has an RJ45 network connector.

Cons:

  • It does not have speakers. Very bulky and heavy equipment. Low durability of the lamp for being LCD. Considerable price.

Better projectors with HD Ready resolution

If the projectors that we have seen in the two previous lists seem very expensive for what you are looking for, here you have some great options for considerably less money. These projectors are prepared to offer HD Ready resolutions, that is, 1280 × 720 pixels, which in many cases will be more than enough. These projectors offer good image quality for almost all audiences and we can enjoy multimedia content such as movies, network videos and television, in addition to being able to play with the whole family.

We will be able to obtain a 100-inch screen at a distance of 3.97 m, having various image modes to provide the best appearance according to our content, brightness, presentation, photographic and cinema. As is common feature in these projectors, its size is very compact and manageable, we are talking about only 20 cm of lake and 13 wide, we could hold it with one hand. A very interesting aspect is that it is capable of projecting 3D content by itself, for example, from a USB device. Its shooting ratio is sensational, since only 33 cm from the wall we will get an 80 ”screen, with a contrast of 100, 000: 1 and a very good color representation.

This projector is portable and has a battery that gives it an autonomy of 2 and a half hours, but it is not everything, because it also has Bluetooth connectivity to connect with three devices wirelessly simultaneously, for example, mobile, speakers and laptop, etc.. Finally we must comment that we can play content directly from our USB and its lamp have a life of 30, 000 hours, much more than liquid crystal technologies.

We go on to see another interesting Viewsonic option for HD playback, although this one is a little more expensive than the previous one. In this case we have DC3 technology with 3500 Lumens and a native resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels, although capable of reproducing content in simulated Full HD. In this case, we do have a very short firing ratio, since at just 1 meter, we can get a 100-inch screen in our living room or bedroom.

Like other models, it has SuperColor technology and is ideal for projecting ceiling-hung classroom, movie, HDTV, or even gaming content. We have an interesting PJ-vTouch-10S extension pack to be able to interact with the projector as if it were a blackboard. Connectivity in terms of USB is still limited, although this time we have a double VGA port for the PC and an output port to a monitor. It also includes an HDMI, RS-232 and 3.5mm Jack for audio input and output. It is undoubtedly a highly educational-oriented team due to its characteristics and firing ratio.

  • Resolution: 1280x800p at 120 Hz. Projection distance: at 1 m we get a 100 ”screen. A 2W speaker. It has an extension pack to interact in whiteboard mode.

Full HD LED projectors

If LED projectors have something, it is the durability of their lamp, and it is that we already know that LED technology is here to stay. Starting with the lighting, following the screens of both PC monitors and television until reaching the projectors as well. The life of the lamps is exceptional, we speak of more than 30, 000 hours and also there is no image degradation, heat, and on or off time. The only downside, to say the least, is its cost, which is still high, and the color temperature, which is cooler than other technologies.

Here we have the latest creation from Asus, a projector with LED projection technology with native Full HD resolution that will give us excellent image quality in diagonals up to 200 inches. In fact, the color adjustment in this equipment is very very good, with 100% NTSC coverage, which is not to say a little, although it is true that it suffers from low light as it usually happens in almost all LED projectors.

In this case we do not have support for HDR, although we do have a refresh rate of 120 Hz that will be great to play for example. Its lens has an autofocus system that works very well and saves us a lot of preparation work. In addition, the sound system is also very good, thanks to a 2W dual speaker and 8W subwoofer configuration.

This projector does not belong to any of the three resolution categories, in fact, its native resolution is 854 × 480 pixels and its technology is DLP type with a highly durable LED lamp. The Viewsonic M1 is one of the latest models of the brand with an excellent quality / price ratio, since it implements LED technology, a very compact and versatile design along with the possibility of projecting up to 1080p resolution simulated. One of its most interesting features is that it has 16 GB internal storage.

In our review we were very satisfied with the product in general, although it is true that the resolution is low, the colors are well achieved and in a dark room it gives good results. Its design in aluminum and its two 3 W speakers, the truth is that they are of its two best assets, in addition, of course, in addition to the internal 16 GB and the long life of its lamp. In this case we do have very good connectivity, with a USB Type-C port, an SD card slot of up to 32 GB and an HDMI 1.4 connector, in addition to the 3.5 mm Jack and the power and service ports.

This LG PH150G LED is without a doubt an excellent option for those who do not want to spend too much money on a good projector with LED technology. Just under 300 euros and it is very worth it, we have a very small and super portable equipment with HD Ready, being able to get a screen of up to 100 inches. Like the previous model, we have a computer with a battery and autonomy of 2.5 hours to play content directly from our USB.

Or if we prefer, we can also connect Bluetooth to pair the equipment with other devices such as speakers and mobile devices to play its content. Being LG, there was no lack of Screen Share technology to share content directly between Smartphone and projector. This projector is ideal for playing movies, projecting games, presentations for our work and everything we want, the image quality is very good and the durability even better. The only drawback is its low brightness, at just 130 lumens.

With a brightness of 3200 Lumens we will be able to watch movies with great color quality and an excellent feeling of immersion even during the day. Without a doubt, the light output is the best asset of this technology and we also do not have a short lamp life of 12, 000 hours.

It has the capacity to project screens of up to 301 inches of the content that we want, whether it is games with its “game mode”, movies or television, which will obtain a good level of black with the brand's Dynamic Blanck technology. With the USB Power connector we can feed an HDMI Dongle like ChromeCast to directly reproduce its content. In summary, for us it is one of the best options available in Full HD content projection.

  • Resolution: Full HD 1920x1080p at 24 FPS. Projection distance: between 1 and 9.8 meters with a maximum diagonal of 301 inches. A single 10W speaker.

And now we are going with what we think is the 4K projector with the best features regarding its price, although it is certainly closely followed by other models such as the ViewSonic that we have seen before. It is an update of the W1700 with lower consumption and almost the same technical data sheet. The benefits of this projector with native 4K are the best in quality / price. It is compatible with HDR10 and is also very well optimized for it, its lamp uses a single 0.47-inch DMD that gives us a really sharp image with its very low dispersion lens and with well-defined and vivid colors, even in 3D.

Its RGBRGB color wheel has CinematicColor technology with 100% coverage in Rec. 709, THX and ISF, in addition to other better ones that the brand has implemented through software to further improve the final quality such as: Pixel Enhancer to improve moving edges, Color Enhancer and Lesh Tone to improve color saturation. It also has a 5W speaker to reproduce the sound with a good quality, although in this sense we miss one more to generate stereo sound.

  • Resolution: Native UHD (3840x2160p) at 120 Hz. Image size up to 300 inches. A single speaker of 5 W. Diagonal 100 "at 3.32 meters being a long throw lens

Pros:

  • Sharp image with excellent colors. Supports HDR10 and has 1.1x and 3D zoom. Pretty good price. Color quality in dark environments

Cons:

  • Contrast something fair. Still without Wi-Fi. You need more brightness.
