What are DNS?

For example, on a server with Debian or Ubuntu it is used as the / etc / hosts resolver and is configured in the files /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/host.conf. Name server: It is in charge of meeting the requests of the resolvers and available from tables where it associates names and IP addresses. These servers can be free or paid.

How a DNS service works on the Internet

The concept as we see is quite simple, it will send a domain name to a server that will transform it into an associated IP address. But the truth is that it is somewhat more complicated in practice.

As a general rule, we do not connect to a DNS server directly, and this is because our own computer and operating system automatically creates a cache where it will store the domain names and associated IPs.

When we type a web address into our browser, it requires a DNS lookup to associate the name with the actual IP address. But the first thing that our system does is check if the answer that the browser is requesting is in the local cache. If it is, it will automatically send the associated IP to establish the remote connection. Only in the case that this information is not saved, the equipment will connect to a DNS server that it finds in its path to request the ISP service. At this time this information will become part of the system cache for future accesses.

As a general rule, normal users use the DNS provided by the Internet service provider as a DNS server. But at any time we can customize the DNS server that will be in charge of performing this service.
