AMD Zen is Sunnyvale's new high-performance CPU microarchitecture and is tasked with bringing them back into the fray in the high-end CPU market. Zen drastically breaks with the Bulldozer design and focuses on delivering high performance per clock cycle, the major weak point of AMD's latest generation of processors.

Zen will use the AM4 socket and release a new dual chanel DDR4 memory controller along with a new GMI interconnect bus that multiplies by four the bandwidth offered by HyperTransport 3.1 to achieve a data transfer rate of up to 100 GB / s. A huge jump in bandwidth that seeks to end the poor performance offered by AMD's current memory controller. Summit Ridge processors will arrive initially with up to 8 high-performance AMD Zen cores manufactured in 14nm FinFET and accompanied by 512 HB of L2 cache per core and 8MB of L3 cache for each quad-core block.

Zen is undoubtedly an enormous effort from AMD and an even bigger leap forward compared to FX manufactured in 32nm and based on a modular architecture that I have never gotten to work as it should have. Fortunately Bulldozer is already part of the past and now it's time to think about Zen.
