MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X technical characteristics
Design and unboxing
MSI makes a presentation simple but really attractive to the public. On the cover we see an image of the graphics card, the model and the series that we have.
While in the rear area we have all the technical characteristics of the product.
Once we open the box we find a CD with the drivers / software, a quick guide and some stickers to give a different touch to our computer.
The MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X graphics card uses the new graphics architecture Nvidia Pascal, specifically it is the GP106 that It is manufactured in 16nm FinFET and has a very compact die size of just 200mm2. Despite being a chip of small dimensions, it includes 4.4 billion transistors, so we are dealing with a really very complex and advanced design. The dimensions of this We warn that the dimensions of the graphics card is much longer than that of the reference model with 279 x 140 x 39 mm, a weight of 1017 grams.
It is complemented by transistors distributed within the chip in a total of 10 Streaming Multiprocessors units, these in turn contain the large number of 1280 CUDA cores with Pascal architecture. We also found no less than 80 texturizing units (TMUs) and 48 crawling units (ROPs).
The MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X run Some frequencies in its GPU of 1, 569 MHz in base mode that goes up to 1, 178 MHz under Turbo B oost 3.0 for really good performance. As we have always said, custom models come with more nut increases, so their performance is much higher than this reference model. It also has two other overclock and silent profiles, we detail it below:
- 1809 MHz / 1594 MHz (Overclock Mode) 1784 MHz / 1569 MHz (Gaming Mode) 1708 MHz / 1506 MHz (Silent Mode)
We continue talking about its characteristics and this time we have to tell you that it has a total of 8GB GDDR5X, which is an improved version that supports stable up to 81 00 MHz without problem. This new design is cooler, more heat resistant and with greater potential. So it becomes the perfect ally for 2560 x 1440p 144Hz and 4K configurations with G-Sync.
The MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X with the new TWIN FROZR VI heatsink which is a 0dB cooling system that will keep the processor, power phases and memories cool. The heatsink is accompanied by several black aluminum sheets that cool all the components, and of course it has the recent MSI TORX 2.0 fans that offer 22% more pressure on the entire aluminum surface.
The fans are activated when 60ºC are reached, and they stop once the same temperature is reduced. It is a delight to see its performance and cooling capacity.
About the RGB lighting only the lototype of the upper area (the dragon) counts.
Incorporates an 8-pin power connection. MSI recommends the minimum use of a 400W power supply, we recommend that you have at least a quality 500W. If you have doubts, you can ask us as always.
Finally we show you the rear connections made up of:
- 1 DVI connection. 3 DisPlayPORT connections. 1 HDMI connections.
PCB and internal components
To remove the heatsink is very simple. It is as simple as removing the 4 main screws (the one with the warranty seal) of the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X and we will see the inside of the heatsink.
As we can see the TWIN FROZR VI cooling system has an aluminum heatsink, a plastic LED housing, a heatsink for the supply phases and another for the supply phases. In addition to the comments TORX 2.0 fans and the backplate.
Engineers at the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X have mounted all components on a fully customizable PCB with a robust VRM consisting of 5 + 1 phases of Super Alloy Power II power supported by Military Class technology.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:
- 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike version 4K.Heaven 4.0.Doom 4.Overwatch.Tomb Raider.Battlefield 4.
All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.
What are we looking for in the tests?
First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:
FRAMES BY SECONDS |
|
Frames for Seconds. (FPS) |
Gameplay |
Less than 30 FPS | Limited |
30 - 40 FPS | Playable |
40 - 60 FPS | Good |
Greater than 60 FPS | Fairly Good or Excellent |
Synthetic benchmarks
This time, we've narrowed it down to three tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.
Game Testing
We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Overclock and first impressions
Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.
We have increased overclocking capacity by +91 MHz in the core to the MSI GTX 1060, leaving a maximum of 2110 MHz and the memories at +496.
Does it go up a little? Yes, but it is that we are reaching the limit of 2.1 GHz, which is where they are all arriving. What is the improvement? After our tests just 1-2 FPS so it is not a brutal improvement either. As it comes standard it is more than enough to work with any game to the fullest.
Temperature and consumption
The temperatures of the MSI GTX 1060 GAMING X could not have been better. At rest we have obtained 44ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 63 ºC in any case. As the overclock has been so mild, temperatures barely rise (68ºC).
Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 71 W at rest and W playing with an Intel i7-6700K processor.
Final words and conclusion about MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X
The MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X is a model that has very high frequencies and a great dissipation capacity. It incorporates 6 GB of GDDR5 memory, a 0DB cooling system (the fans do not start until the graphics start to have a load and a backplate that gives a really nice look to the whole team.
After testing long gaming sessions we have reached stable 2 GHz as standard (not all do), while overclocking we have overcome the 2.1 GHz barrier, so it has enough merit for a card that only has a connection of 8 power pins. In the graphics card section you can see the excellent performance in games with 1080, 1440p resolutions and how it defends itself in 4K.
In short, it is one of the best graphics card options on the market in the 1060 series and we believe that it should be among your candidates if you are going to mount your PC.
