Both Nvidia and Intel have released their latest and greatest player components in recent months, prompting new devices with better features to hit the market. MSI has stacked up to create its own masterpiece, using ninth-generation Intel Core CPUs and Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs to build the smallest form-factor gaming platform. We are talking about the MSI Trident X, a small gaming machine with a volume of only 10 liters and, of course, RGB lighting.

First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

MSI Trident X technical features

Unboxing and design

The MSI Trident X system comes in a fairly standard box, although it is considerably larger than the machine itself to guarantee great protection, thanks to a large amount of foam inside the box, plus a new and brilliant system, you will also find a tempered glass panel with vents for the CPU cooler, an additional SATA cable and documentation.

Inside the packing box we can find the following elements:

  • MSI Trident X Documentation & Instructions Replacement tempered glass drive for chassis Enclosure with power connectors and SATA cable

The Trident X is a team that measures almost 400 mm in height, which makes it considerably smaller than most gaming PCs, especially when they are packaging the type of specifications it includes. Its exact dimensions are 129.74 x 382.73 x 396.39 mm with a weight of 6.55 Kg. The aesthetics in general is very aggressive, making it clear from the first moment that it is a gaming team, it will not go unnoticed anywhere.

The left side of the chassis is vented in two key locations, just in the top section to allow optimal airflow to the graphics card, the GeForce RTX 2080 in this case, and a smaller section to the front to ensure source feed can breathe.

The right side is a little more orthodox, with a perforated mesh segment that gives the Intel Core i7 9700K CPU a fresh and charming air. This section is replaceable by the tempered glass panel attached to us by MSI.

The front is angular and made of shiny plastic, with a strip of vents on the front and fairly complete connectivity.

At the top we can find the power button in a triangular shape of considerable size. Just behind it, and occupying the rest of the upper chassis, we find a ventilation grille for air extraction without forced ventilation and without a dust filter.

On the front panel we have a USB 3.1 Type C port, as well as a pair of USB 3.1 Type A ports. This should be sufficient for everyday use, when combined with the rear ports. You'll also find a microphone and headphone jack. Along the top there is a row of ventilation strips to allow hot air to escape outside. On the side, at the top we find a power button, large and well placed.

On the back, we can see the connections of the MSI RTX 2080 graphics card , we have a trio of DisplayPort 1.4 connections, an HDMI 2.0b and a USB Type-C with DisplayPort.

A little further down we find the I / O board of the motherboard, which includes the following connections:

  • 5 x 3.5mm audio jacks SPDIFIntel I219-V Gigabit LAN2x optical output USB 3.1 Gen. 2 ports (one of which is VR Ready) Clear CMOS1x USB 3.1 Gen. 2 Type-A1x USB 3.1 Gen. 2 Type button- C1x DisplayPort1x HDMI2x USB 2.01x PS / 2 port for keyboard and mouse

In its lower part we find the support area and contact with the ground. This is wider than the rest of the chassis, precisely to prevent the equipment from falling or tipping over. In turn we find the rubber feet and the entire back ventilated by metal grilles, but without a dust filter

We leave some images that allow us to observe in more detail the external appearance

Interior and components

When removing the side panels of the MSI Trident X, we look at the GPU first, it is an MSI GeForce RTX 2080, containing 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM and 2944 CUDA Cores to deliver exceptional performance.

Under the GPU is the back of the LGA 1151 CPU socket. Note that the motherboard is inverted so the CPU is on the bottom and facing the other way. Here you will find an interesting Intel Core i7 9700K. Since it is the K version you already know that we can overclock it. We will see if the refrigeration will allow us to do it safely.

The processor heatsink includes RGB, and uses a turbine fan, which pushes air through the heatsink and feeds it into the motherboard and RAM, helping to move air to prevent heat pockets from remaining due to small chassis.

We also see the NVMe SSD at this location, a 512GB Samsung PM981, with a large thermal pad added on top to contact the case side, for better thermal performance. The 650-watt power supply is hidden in its own corner so that its heat is prevented from affecting the rest of the components.

The MSI Trident X can also be equipped with an Intel Core i9-9900K and an MSI RTX 2080Ti. The rest of the spec is rounded out with 32GB of DDR4-2666 memory, the 512GB Samsung NVMe SSD, 2TB of hard drive, and a LAN with an advanced Intel I219v controller. There's also no shortage of Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC wireless networking technology .

MSI has added a second storage drive bay in MSI Trident X, which comes standard empty, allowing for a certain degree of expandability, something not often found in custom systems like this. Hence, a SATA cable has been included in the bundle.

To complete this configuration this MSI Trident X has a 450W Plus Bronze power supply. Enough, although it is an aspect in which it loosens a little, since a gold or platinum range would have been adequate for benefits of this magnitude.

The MSI Mystic Light RGB lighting puts the finishing touch on the aesthetics of this MSI Trident X, it is a highly configurable system that allows us to choose between 16.8 million colors, as well as several different light effects. We leave you some images of how spectacular it looks next to the tempered glass panel.

The first test this MSI Trident X will undergo is the performance check of the SSD. For this we have used the CristalDiskMark software in its latest version. The results in question have been the following.

The performance, as expected, is excellent, especially in the reading section. We highlight its performance in writing and reading in sequential mode. This will ensure a team with very fast access to data, so we expect a very good performance in the gaming section.

The processor heatsink includes RGB lighting, and uses a turbine fan, which pushes air through the heatsink and feeds it into the motherboard and RAM, helping to move air to prevent heat pockets from remaining due to small chassis.

We now turn to check the performance of the CPU and cache memory. For the CPU benchmark we have used the Cinebench R15 software and for testing the performance of the cache memory the Aida64 Engineering software. The results we have obtained have been the following.

Then we will proceed to check the performance of this MSI Trident X in terms of graphic performance with its MSI RTX 2080. For this we have used two benchmarking softwares, on the one hand, 3Dmark in the Fire Strike and Time Spy tests, and on the other PCMark8 with your Home Conventional test.

Finally we will now see the behavior of the team in some of the most demanding games. All of them have been executed in 1080p resolution and the tests have been carried out using the FRAPS benchmarking software in several attempts of 180 seconds obtaining an average.

Thermal performance

MSI has the standard MSI Command Center software to control the ventilation of this equipment. With it we can control a large number of parameters of our equipment. on its main screen for example we will have a panel that monitors the CPU frequency and a graph where we can configure the curve of the fan's revolutions. In this way we can design a graphic for when we need a silent PC, a high-performance computer or directly let the program define the optimal configuration.

In addition, we will have the option to overclock the RAM and the CPU from this same software, for this we have a table of memory parameters and another table of CPU voltages. In this way we can carefully modify these parameters.

We will also have a real-time monitor of the different temperature sensors of the CPU and the motherboard. By means of the Cooling button in this window we can quickly cool the equipment, putting the CPU fan to its maximum speed.

Finally we will be able to visualize on various screens different system information, such as motherboard, CPU and RAM.

In short, it is a software with a very well-kept interface and a gaming appearance with a black background and red details very consistent with the brand. It has a large number of options available and all are very close at hand and clear. All the windows are magnetic to be able to stick and order them to our liking.

Leaving this aside we have proceeded to check the maximum temperatures that MSI Trident X has reached after subjecting it to a stress process of the CPU and GPU for 50 minutes obtaining the following results. The ambient temperature during the tests was 24 o C.

We can see that the maximum temperature of the CPU has been 77 o C from a rest of 31 o C. We have also verified that the thermal frequency imitator (Thermal Throtling) has not made an appearance at any time, at least with the CPU without overclocking.

As for the temperatures of the graphics card, they have been 62 o C starting from a resting state of 28 o C. In this sense, we highlight how good the aluminum heatsink that MSI has mounted on this RTX 2080 is.

We have also performed these same tests playing for more than an hour and the components have not reached higher temperatures than those shown. Perhaps during a summer day these rise a few degrees more.

Final words and conclusion about MSI Trident X

MSI Trident X is designed for demanding gamers who want the latest in graphics hardware. With its RTX 2080, the performance obtained has been excellent and with little tousling. Its small and compact black chassis and LED lighting give it a very aggressive and gaming look. Its RGB Mystic Light lighting section is also very good configurable through the corresponding software.

Inside we find an 8-core Intel Core i7 9700k with the possibility of overclocking as well as the 32 GB DDR4 of RAM. And with one of the flagships of the new generation of top-end graphics, we will have no problem moving the latest games to 1080p resolutions. Although it has not been possible to test them at 2K or 4K you can see the results that this RTX 2080 offers in our recent reviews.

If we add to this the 512 GB NVMe SSD and the 2TB mechanical hard drive, we can store all the games we want and get the best rates on the market.

We recommend reading the best gamer headphones on the market

In the refrigeration section we have to say that its performance has also been very good, never exceeding 80 degrees. Neither the fan has reached its maximum speed. We must bear in mind that during the tests the ambient temperature was low, so in summer it should rise a few more degrees. We also highlight the silence that this MSI Trident X is, we hardly notice that it is next to us if it were not for the mechanical hard drive and the lighting.

The only aspect that we did not like is its 80 plus bronze power supply. We believe that this equipment deserves something more suited to the size of the other components.
