The abbreviations MTTR are not as famous in the community, but among maintenance technicians, for example. We tell you what is inside.

Today we are going to focus on the maintenance of computers, specifically on their repair. Many of us have turned to technicians or maintenance companies to repair our equipment. This is where the MTTR takes center stage. Next, we explain it to you.

What is the MTTR?

The acronym MTTR stands for Mean Time To Repair , which translated into Spanish is " average time to repair ". This is a metric or quantity that is used in the professional field of maintenance and represents how long it takes to repair or resolve a fault since it originated.

In this way, the total time is taken into consideration: from the moment the equipment suffers the failure until it is finally resolved and it is returned to its normal conditions.

Therefore, the MTTR allows technicians to organize themselves to repair the problem by estimating an average resolution time. There are more complicated incidents than others, which means investing more time in its correction. This magnitude makes it easier for technicians to know how long it will take to fix the problem effectively.

And now, the star question How is this MTTR measured or calculated? It is calculated by dividing the total maintenance time by the number of repair actions the technician has to do. We express it graphically:

Many times, it is sought to reduce the MTTR in relation to a problem. You can make the mistake of wanting to reduce only the total time to achieve it, but the truth is that you have to reduce both.

However, the MTTR may not be useful when many repair actions are not required. This is because fault repair may take 2 hours and one action. Otherwise, it would be that the failure involves 2 hours and 100 actions.

CMMS What is it?

The positive of this metric is the help it provides among technicians who are colleagues. If a technician receives a request to fix a common fault, they can see how many hours it took their partner (or himself if the task was performed by him) to repair it so they can better organize themselves and estimate the repair time.

CMMS (Computer Assisted Maintenance Management) is a tool that helps maintenance companies to register all their operations, equipment, etc. Its objective is to increase the productivity of the equipment, automating very simple tasks, such as illustrating to the technicians the repair time that a task has taken. Thus, we can see the average repair time of a failure.

Sometimes the CMMS can be called CMMS ( C omputerized Maintenance Management System) or GMAC, but it is the same. With this, to say that there is no tool called CMMS, but it is the name given to tools of this type, which have the mentioned functions. So there are many CMMS on the market.

We hope we have explained what the MTTR is in the simplest possible way. If you have any questions, please send them to us by commenting in the comments section.

Did you know before what it was? Have you ever had your equipment under maintenance for a long time?
