Yesterday we told you about the launch of Navi 20 and how it could host Ray Tracing technology. Now more details are added regarding the performance that they could have and the interlinings about Navi, Vega and Raja Koduri.

Navi 20 with RayTracing and performance on par with the RTX 2080 Ti

Details say that before Raja Koduri, former head of AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, left the company, one of his main tasks was to fix many of the weaknesses in GCN's architecture. The reason for doing this was to let RTG focus on both fronts, producing next-generation architecture and working on GCN iterations to remain competitive against NVIDIA's GeForce and Quadro product lines. We've now seen that this strategy has worked well for AMD in the mainstream market, but its flagship products weren't necessarily the best versus NVIDIA's high-end products.

The reason Vega fell short of expectations was because when Raja joined RTG, the Vega GPU design was almost complete and there was little it could do. Raja's real goal was to work on the Navi GPUs, which would continue to build on the existing GCN architecture, but be refined through fixes, for example in the geometry engine, as RedGamingTech has reported. It is now possible and very likely that AMD had finished the design for Navi long before Raja left RTG. What will happen to Navi when it enters the development phase is something we are very close to discovering now, as rumors point to the launch of the first Navi-based Radeon RX cards in mid-2019.

Regarding the performance of the Navi 20, the estimates for the RayTracing are said to be very good and that the GPU may end up being competitive or even faster than the competing GeForce RTX cards, pointing to the performance of the RTX 2080 Ti. It is also claimed that HPC or data center cards based on the Navi GPU architecture would be very different compared to consumer parts. They likely have a more custom SOC-oriented design, somewhat similar to what NVIDIA does with its high-end Tesla parts.

The launch of Navi 20 would be scheduled for 2020, this year AMD plans to launch the first Navi 10 graphics cards, but for the mid-range market. This also means it will take AMD 1 1/2 to 2 years to have products to compete on par with NVIDIA's high-end series.
