NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 technical specifications

Unboxing and design

Netgear has opted for a luxury presentation to send users its impressive NightHawk X10 AD7200, the router is presented in a large cardboard box with the company's corporate colors, among which black and blue predominate.

On the front we are offered a great image of the product as well as its most important characteristics, Netgear boasts of having the fastest router on the market that will delight the most demanding users with the speed of their network. The various faces of the box have also been used to detail its specifications in the main languages, obviously including Spanish.

We mention that all the elements are very well protected to avoid any type of damage before reaching the hands of the end user, a gala presentation is usually the hallmark of the biggest brands and Netgear does not fall short in this regard.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 Router Power Supply for Europe and UK Installation Disc Quick Guide RJ45 Cat 5E Cable

We already look at the NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 router and we see a device that is manufactured in a very good quality black plastic body. We are quickly struck by the large number of indicator lights on its front and its four high-performance antennas that will work together to offer us the best possible coverage. The overall design is quite attractive and follows the typical pattern of routers, flat and with the thickness going down towards the front.

As for the wired connections, it offers us a total of 7 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps ports on the back so that we can navigate at full speed on a large number of devices with the best signal quality that can only be obtained through a wired connection. It also offers two USB 3.0 ports so that we can connect various storage devices such as hard drives and be able to share content over the network.

We also find a WPS button and the on / off button that cannot be missed. As we have already commented on other occasions, it is recommended to disable the connection by WPS from the router configuration due to the security problems that this can bring .

NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 supports Ethernet Port Aggregation technology, which allows two LAN ports to be combined into one to improve file transfer speeds with compatible devices, for example NAS devices.

One of the most impressive features of the NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 is that it supports WiFi 802.11ac + 802.11ad standards. What does this mean? It can work on the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 60GHz bands to offer a maximum transfer rate of 7200 Mbps, a lot that will give us tremendous speed when it comes to browsing and enjoying all kinds of content without the hassle of cables in short-range sections (same room).

The router only allows horizontal placement on a flat surface. Four large rubber areas hold the router in position and leave room for the vents that cover the entire bottom area.

As for the internal components, we find a powerful quad-core processor that runs at a speed of 1.7 GHz to manage all the hardware in a very effective way. It is a router that operates in the 2.4 gHz, 5 GHz and 60 GHz bands which are capable of providing a maximum speed of 800 Mbps, 1733 Mbps and 4600 Mbps respectively, when adding them all, the maximum is obtained 7200 Mbps theoretical that the manufacturer promises.

To take advantage of each of these bands we must have a compatible receiving device, something that today is very rare in the 60 GHz band. This last band provides the maximum transfer speed but is not capable of crossing the walls, so there should be no obstacle between the emitter and the receiver .

NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200 is compatible with MU-MIMO technology that allows the router to send 1 stream of data to each of the clients, what is achieved with this is that the clients receive and send data in parallel all three, and not in series as it happened with SU-MIMO and the bandwidth is taken advantage of to the maximum. Not only will it allow you to maximize bandwidth for clients to achieve maximum speed, but it also allows you to rush wireless clients to transfer their data.

We also highlight Amazon Drive cloudy Plex Media Server technologies that allow you to share and send photos, videos and all kinds of content from a USB storage device.

Testing equipment

To make the performance measurements we will use the following components:

  • 1 Asus PCE-AC88 Client.Team 1, with Intel i219v network card.Team 2, with Killer E2500 network card.JPerf version 2.0.

Wireless Performance

In this case we are lucky to have a 3T3R client and we will be able to exploit this router to the best of its ability. This is the PCE-AC88 that we have already analyzed, so it has a Broadcom chip, which has shown better performance than the Quantenna chip-based client that we use to test against your most direct rivals. The yields obtained have been the following:

  • Router - Equipment in the same room: 646 Mbit / s in download Router - Equipment in Room at 15 meters with several walls: 363 Mbit / s in download.

Firmware and configuration

The installation of the device is super fast and intuitive. By default it allows us to choose an advanced configuration or a recommended one for non-expert users. In our we chose advanced and we only had to configure the language to have the router fully operational.

To enter the administration panel you must write your gateway: 192.168.1.1. Surely it asks for username and password to login. It is very important that you review the documentation offered by the NetGear NightHawk X10, in our case the user was: " admin " and the password " password " (both without quotes).

Tip: If you don't have a connection, try turning the router and modem on and off at the same time.

The user can use the Netgear Genie web console or the Genie application to manage the NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200. The home page contains the basic Internet and wireless settings. It also displays information about attached devices (IP address and MAC address), setting up Guest Networks, setting up a Plex Media Server, viewing Amazon Drive backup settings, and enabling ReadySHARE printer and shared storage options.

Finally, it allows you to enable Parental Controls (parental controls) to restrict Internet access time and block specific sites, but first you need to download the mobile or web application.

The Advanced Settings page displays detailed information about the router, wireless network, and guest network. The Settings menu allows you to configure advanced Internet, Wireless and guest network settings and enables a basic Wi-Fi MultiMedia (WMM) quality of service (QoS) feature, however it lacks QoS settings that allow prioritizing traffic network for specific clients and applications. Advanced security settings allow you to block specific websites and create access schedules, enable aggregation of Ethernet ports, adjust port forwarding and port activation settings, configure VPN services, and view network traffic statistics. All in all, a fairly complete firmware that almost any user can handle.

Finally we leave you some screenshots of its Netgear Up application:

Final words and conclusion about NetGear NightHawk X10 AD7200

The NetGear NightHawk X10 has an aesthetic and internal power that places it among the best routers on the market. With the combination of the band 802.11 AC and 802.11 AD it makes it a true titan in short and long distances.

The most demanding players, streamers and users who need to send heavy files without the annoying cables but wirelessly, will come in handy for the new 60 GHz band. Although previously your computer or devices must have an 802.11 AD client to be able to use it?

At the administration level it is very intuitive and even with the mobile application ' Netgear UP ' it is fast and allows us to adjust and monitor the system. Although we believe that the desktop panel could be somewhat more modern.

We can find the NetGear NightHawk X10 for a price of 439 euros on Amazon with immediate shipping. Undoubtedly, one of the best routers that have passed through our hands that can with up to 20 connected devices.
