Unboxing and design
Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender is presented inside a fairly colorful cardboard box as you can see in the photos. The box shows us several images of the product, as well as its most important characteristics. All specifications are detailed on the back and on the right side, in perfect English. The box is made of very good quality cardboard, with an equally good impression.
Once we open the box, we find a piece of hard cardboard that is responsible for layering the network extender so that it does not move during transport, it is also covered by a plastic bag to prevent damage to its delicate surface. Along with the network extender we find several user manuals in several languages, including in Spanish.
Once we have seen the presentation, we now focus on the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender. It is a large device and made of high quality white plastic, reaching dimensions of 8.2 cm x 16.8 cm x 7.1 cm and a weight of 0.6 Kg. The design of the device is quite simple, with a multitude of vents on the top and rear to prevent its internal components from overheating.
On the front we find the status indicator LEDs, there are a total of four that represent the power on, the operation of the WiFi mode, the connection to the router and the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. The lights turn solid blue when everything works perfectly, red when there are problems and flashing blue when the connection is being established.
On the left side is the button that is used to activate the WPS mode and also to turn the network extender on and off. Pressing it once activates the WPS mode, holding it for more than 10 seconds turns off the network extender, and pressing it when it is off turns it on.
At the back is the plug, integrated to place the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender directly into an outlet. It is striking that it does not include an RJ45 port for a wired connection.
Inside the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender hides a powerful quad-core processor, giving it great capacity to support 4K video streaming and seamless online gaming. Its WiFi 802.11ac technology offers one 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands, which can be combined to offer a maximum transfer rate of 2200 Mbps. Regarding the networks individually, we have the following configuration:
- Band 1: 400 Mbps at 2.4 GHz and QAM 256 Band 2: 866 Mbps at 5 GHz and QAM 256 Band 3: 866 Mbps at 5 GHz and QAM 256
This network extender supports WPA, WPA2, PSK and WEP encryption to ensure maximum security.
Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender is a tri-band device with patented FastLane3 technology, which provides high-bandwidth WiFi connection for all your devices. This network extender creates an extended network for the entire home with the same WiFi network name (SSID) as the primary router, preventing mobile devices such as smartphones and laptops from connecting and disconnecting to various networks while scrolling inside the house.
Its intelligent roaming connects your devices to the most suitable WiFi network to enjoy 4K streaming, surf the Internet and much more. Thanks to this you can enjoy streaming without interruptions in applications such as YouTube or Netflix, even while you are moving around the home.
Configuration and performance testing Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-B
Setting up the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender is really easy thanks to Netgear's advanced and intuitive web console. The first thing to do is connect the network extender to a power outlet and wait a few seconds for the power light to stay solid blue. The next step is to connect to your WiFi network from our PC.
Once connected to the WiFi network of the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender, we access its configuration console from the browser, for this we enter the following address in the navigation bar:
mywifiext.net/
With this we will access the Netgear console that will guide us very intuitively throughout the process. The first thing we will have to do is create an account, then the device will search for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks within its reach so that we select the one we want it to extend. Finally, we will have to select if we want to use the same SSID for both networks or if we want to use a separate one for the extended network, in whose chaos we will have to configure the password.
Once the initial configuration is completed, we will be able to access all the adjustment options of the network extender, which are the usual ones that Netgear has used us in its extenders.
Performance tests have been done with the JPerf version 2.0 application. The server PC is next to the main router on the top floor of the house, we have placed the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender on the ground floor of the house, in an intermediate position between the main router and the PC customer. In this way the extender is about 10 meters from the main router and with several walls in between, the client PC is about 5 meters from the extender (15 meters from the main router) with one wall in between.
With the JPerf version 2.0 application we have obtained a transfer speed of 787-806 Mbps.
Final words and conclusion about Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender
Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender is the first tri-band WiFi extender to hit the market, ensuring the best coverage and maximum transfer speed throughout our home. The design is very robust, with high quality materials to offer great resistance over time. The design includes several vents, which help prevent its components from overheating, this is a very important aspect, given the advanced hardware hidden inside.
The initial configuration of the device is really very simple, in a few mouse clicks and in a few minutes we will have the network extender working perfectly. The possibility of creating a WiFi mesh network sharing the SSID between the two networks is something very important, since it avoids the problem that most extenders present, and that is that two different networks are managed for the extender itself and the main router, making mobile devices have to connect and disconnect from one and the other as they move inside the house. With this Netgear Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender we will enjoy a single SSID with all the advantages that this implies.
The transfer speed obtained in the tests was 73 Mbps, a value that allows you to enjoy a connection to the network without problems. In the day-to-day experience, it has behaved excellently, since we have been able to play 4K content, play and work without cuts or interruptions.
