Wifi dead zones are really annoying and the worst thing is knowing that the signal quality is actually improving or declining from one room to another. Mesh routers were created to solve these kinds of problems, extending your Internet connection to new spaces and strengthening the signal where it was already present. Choosing the correct mesh router can make these problems go away. Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is one of the latest models to hit the market, today we offer its full review.

We thank Netgear for the trust placed in ceding the product to us.

Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700: technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is presented in a medium-sized cardboard box with a very colorful design, in which black, white and blue abound, with black being the majority color. Netgear has taken advantage of all the faces of the box to detail all the most important characteristics, which we will see throughout this complete analysis. We open the box and see a piece of cardboard where all the items are arranged. We found Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 itself, a very compact power supply and all the documentation.

Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is a Tri-Band Wi-Fi Mesh Extender and the third of the brand's Nighthawk Mesh Extenders. Before the EX7700 launched, Netgear offered only the entry-level Nighthawk EX7500, and the high-end Nighthawk EX8000. People looking for a middle ground had no other choice within the brand, but the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 fills that gap.

Compared to its cousins, the EX7700 is right in the middle. It doesn't have the same incredible range and performance as that of the 8000 series, but it is certainly a clear step above the smaller mesh routers that are built for moderately large homes. The Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 supports two 802.11AC antennas, supports 866Mbps in the 5GHz band and 400Mbps in the lower 2.4GHz band.

Additionally, the EX7700 works as a tri-band extender, giving you the ability to dedicate one of your antennas solely to back-end network task management. The remaining bands are free to provide Wi-Fi that doesn't start to slow down the moment many people log into the network.

From a superficial point of view, the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 appears as an average among mesh routers. Through the triangular angles on either side of the device, a distinctive look is obtained, visually separating the Nighthawk X6 from its less impressive counterparts. Unfortunately, the X6 EX7700 does not include the ability to mount the unit on the wall. At the top and bottom we see some ventilation grills, something ideal so that your powerful processor is not overwhelmed by the heat generated.

Also, size shouldn't be a big concern due to the compact 19.3 x 11.3 x 4.1 cm build , which is no more intrusive than any other router you've ever had. Weighing 0.53kg , the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is as easy to move as any other router. On the back along the base we find a WPS button, two Ethernet ports, the on / off button, the reset button and the power port.

One thing to note is its use of a secure boot function. Netgear signed software is required to run the device. In short, what this means is that manipulating the EX7700 from the outside is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Conversely, for authorized users, it supports a convenient access point mode. That allows you to connect multiple wired devices through a shared access point, keeping the device fast and secure without sacrificing network performance.

But what really increases network performance is the integrated quad-core processor. The Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is clearly made for 4K gaming environments and without delay. Whether you are using 4K content or not, it is built with an advanced design that is ready to solve any Internet bandwidth concerns that may arise in the next decade.

As more and more devices connect to a router, it will begin to slow down. Even if all the devices on the network only use a small amount of data, performance can go flat. Since most routers can only communicate with one device at a time, it is much more difficult to serve six people than one. But relatively recently, a new standard called MU-MIMO was built, which is fully compatible with the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700. This is a feature that allows routers to communicate with multiple devices at the same time in a more efficient way. Each device has to wait less time to access the network. In a home with 8 devices fighting for the router's attention, the difference is something you can feel right away. For streaming and gaming, where latency and bandwidth can be critically important, these differences can be day and night.

Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 setup and performance

Setting up the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is a breeze thanks to Netgear's advanced web console. The first thing to do is connect the network extender to a power outlet and wait a few seconds for the power light to stay on. The next step is to connect to your WiFi network from our PC. Once connected, we access your configuration console from the browser, for this we enter the following address in the navigation bar:

mywifiext.net/

With this we will access the Netgear console that will guide us very intuitively throughout the process. The first thing we will have to do is create an account, then the device will search for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks within its reach to select the one we want it to extend. Finally, we can select if we want to use the same SSID for both networks or if we want to use a separate one for the extended network, in which case we will have to configure the password.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700, a new high-end WiFi mesh extender

Performance tests have been done with the JPerf version 2.0 application. The server PC is next to the main router on the top floor of the house, we have placed the Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 on the ground floor of the house, in an intermediate position between the main router and the client PC. In this way the extender is about 10 meters from the main router and with several walls in between, the client PC is about 5 meters from the extender (15 meters from the main router) with one wall in between.

With the JPerf version 2.0 application we have obtained a transfer speed of 2200 Kbps.

Final words and conclusion about Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700

Netgear Nighthawk X6 EX7700 is placed in a very interesting position in the market, since it is a WiFi network extender with features that are very close to those of the best models, but maintains a price closer to mid-range devices. It is a highly recommended extender for all users who have WiFi coverage problems at home. Its meshed WiFi or Mesh WiFi function allows the network generated by the extender to have the same credentials as the main network, so in practice it is a fusion of both networks to avoid having to connect to one or the other depending on the location.

The performance is very good , during the tests we have not had any problem of cuts or delays in the connection, so the reliability of this extender is beyond doubt. The configuration is really simple through the Netgear web console, and it will be even more so if you want to use the WPS functionality with a compatible router. Finally, we highlight the robust design of the device, with high quality materials and a very solid finish.
