Using a good router at home is essential. First to have a stable local connection, security in wireless connections and not have problems with a specific number of clients ( many company routers are not very good and with 2-3 computers playing on the local network it collapses). For this reason Netgear Orbi RBK30 has sent us.
It is a router + client fixed in our socket. Ideal to amplify the Wifi signal of our house at a very attractive price. Ready to see our analysis? Well here we go!
We thank Netgear for trusting us with the product for its review:
Netgear Orbi RBK30 technical specifications
Unboxing and design
The Netgear Orbi RBK30 comes in a compact box with full-color staging. An image of the router and satellite kit is already seen on the porta so that we can appreciate its characteristics before buying them.
Once we open the bundle we find the following bundle:
- Netgear Orbi RBK30 Manual and Quick Guide Power adapter for router 1 RJ45 network cable Disc with software
Netgear Orbi RBK30 is a set of network router and extender that its function is to extend and give the greatest range of our WiFi network simple and without any head warming for its new owner. Unlike the Orbi RBK40 and Orbi RBK50 that we have been analyzing during this year, their formats are different. But both share that they are minimalist products and that they perfectly fit in our home or office. As for the dimensions they reach measurements of 36.3 x 14.5 x 24.5 cm and a weight of 304 grams.
The router includes AC2200 tri-band technology with four internal antennas that can offer a maximum theoretical speed of 1, 266 Mhz (400Mbps in the 2.4GHz band and 866Mbps in the 5GHz band).
But having a router + satellite will I have more speed? No, what it allows you is to extend the coverage of your network to the entire house. No need to change and configure your wireless network… A delight for lovers of the simple and functional!
In short, its mission is to solve the problem of loss of coverage so that we can enjoy our WiFi in all parts of our house. Or at least reach 95% of it, remember that it is capable of covering up to 200 m2 (depending on conditions).
As expected, it allows support for Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) and Beamforming technologies that we will talk about on the go.
At the top of both is a circular shaped LED lighting system that alerts us to the status of the router. The cases that can occur:
- In boot process: white light in amber. Traffic limit: in magenta or blue. Working correctly: light off.
While at the back of the router are all its connections. We came across three 10/100/1000 LAN connections, a WAN port, the sync button, factory reset, and the power button.
As a satellite we find an Orbi Wall Plug that will be directly connected to the wall socket. Keep in mind that this extender does not have a LAN connection, so its function is to extend network coverage.
Like the router, it brings a 2 × 2 system in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band so as not to lose a spark of power with its great 710 MHz quad-core processor.
Therefore, we recommend that the distance between the router - satellite is with good coverage. In this way we will have a stable signal and we will be able to take full advantage of our team.
Like the router, it incorporates an LED lighting system in the upper area. This gently illuminates to indicate the status of the WiFi connection and automatically turns off if the connection is fully stable.
On a physical level we have little to emphasize. Only that it brings enough racks to cool the internal system and the incorporation of two buttons: reset and synchronization.Testing equipment
To make the performance measurements we will use the following components:
- 1 Client 2T2R.Pendrive USB3.0 Sandisk Extreme (approximately 200mbps read / write), formatted as NTFS.Team 1, with Intel i219v network card.Team 2, with Killer E2500 network card.JPerf version 2.0.
Wireless Performance
In this case we are lucky to have a 2T2R client and we will be able to exploit this router to the best of its ability. It is an Atheros network card that we use in one of our high-performance notebooks.
The tests carried out are with the router + wifi extender. So we have better performance than other similar models over long distances.
The yields obtained have been the following:
- Router - Equipment in the same room: 52 MB / s. Router - Equipment in the Room at 5 meters with 1 wall: 45 MB / s. Router - Satellite in the Room at 7 meters with 1 wall: 37 MB / s.
Firmware and configuration
As usual, the configuration of the routers or mesh is super easy. It is as easy as entering the IP of the gateway: 192.168.1.1 from any browser and entering the wizard. We did not get caught by our company's modem and we had to restart both devices. The configuration is intuitive and you will not have any problems, in a few steps we will already be inside the firmware.
We have access to both the basic and advanced settings section with the admin user. In these categories it allows us to manage security with parental controls or to block access to websites. We can also configure it to send us an email when someone tries to access a blocked site, very useful for the most suspicious users.
At the statistical level we have a traffic quantifier that will help us control the amount of data used in case we have a limited plan contracted. We can configure that access to the network is cut off once the traffic limit is reached.
What we don't like is that the 2.4 and 5 GHz connection come together . So at no time can we choose which connection to work on each device connected to our Wifi. One aspect to improve in future firmware or model revisions. The Orbi RBK30 is not compatible with Netgear UP, which is the APP for your Android or iOS smartphone.
Final words and conclusion about Netgear Orbi RBK30
The Netgear Orbi RBK30 is presented with an outstanding cover letter! With its AC2200 Wifi router + extender system, it offers excellent coverage for 95% of fatalities. The router incorporates 3 LAN + 1 WAN connections for excellent local performance.
It has given us everything expected in its performance. We find it an excellent option to cover our entire home (it promises up to 200 m2), since the repeater is in charge of expanding the Wifi range throughout our home. A great option for those users who have large houses, 2 floors or their walls limit coverage?
We recommend you read the best routers on the market
Its price is quite tempting, since we can find it for about 300 euros. Although we have seen it in an offer for 280 euros on Amazon this year. Although it may be out of your budget, the reality is that there are hardly any better Wi-Fi Mesh systems at this price. Great job Netgear!
