In terms of design, the Nexus 5x differs only in details from the 2013 predecessor. In that time frame, several manufacturers have produced more beautiful devices with better material choice. Only the most die-hard Nexus fans will find this smartphone as something really attractive, although we miss a few more PREMIUM finishes.

The opaque polycarbonate, which pleased many two years ago, continues with this new nut adjustment on the Nexus 5X. Indeed, it should be said that in the hands it is almost the same as the old Nexus 5. Although visibly larger, and we noticed an improvement regarding the traces on the back. The buttons are easily reached and have higher quality. Those who like to control the smartphone with one hand will have no problem if they have big hands.

On the other hand, we have bad news for those who like fine designs on the screen. The Nexus 5X does not have a good use of the screen since it only takes out 69% of useful surface. On the right and left of the screen there are unused spaces. Large borders in screen frames are now considered somewhat old-fashioned.

In the case of the Nexus 5x it does not only occur on the sides of the screen. The bottom could also be a few millimeters less. In this way, the Nexus 5X would have an even better footprint and its design would be more modern.

At 5.2 inches in screen size, the device can almost be considered standard, as in 2015 devices of that size are in the compact class. Compared to the Nexus 5, the Nexus 5X is slightly larger (dimensions are 147 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm), also thinner and weighing 143 grams.

As a consequence, the power and volume buttons on the right side are easily accessible with the thumb. And the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back is also very practical, since the thumb is naturally in that position to stabilize the phone in the hand. In this way, the unlocking of the device occurs very quickly.

5.2 inch screen

Google has decided not to risk on the screen of the Nexus 5X. Instead of participating in the pixel competition, he settled on the classic 1920 * 1080 px (Full HD) resolution. There are no problems in the choice, because with 5.2 inches the 423 dpi is sufficient and with its low battery… a higher resolution would tire even more the autonomy of this great phone.

For the protection and resistance of the screen, the Gorilla Glass 3 has been used, and here Google and LG have saved a little, since there is a new version of the Gorilla Glass4, which is stronger and offers greater resistance to shocks… as already seen in the new Nexus 6P.

In itself, however, the screen does not present problems. The brightness is adequate, without predominant color tones, and the visibility at inclined angles is very good. Everything expected of a Nexus.

USB Type C

A peculiarity of the Nexus 5x is the USB Type C connection. It is a symmetrical input, which can be connected to both sides. Also, in the future it will be possible to upload one device to another with the new standard.

Unfortunately Google has not put an adapter for the still predominant USB Type A, so it will be necessary to buy an extra to connect the Nexus 5x to the computer.

OS

The Nexus 5x is the first smartphone to arrive with the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow from the factory. With this, from a software point of view, it is a more modern Android smartphone than all the others. Those who like pure Android will love the experience with the Nexus 5x.

The Nexus 5x advantage is the same as that of its predecessor: it is more easily modifiable than any other Android smartphone.

performance

In the Nexus 5x we have the same hardware as that of the LG G4, but the performance is almost identical with the last update. The Nexus 5x does not suffer from temperature problems as some media speak… therefore it does not cut its performance in half after a few minutes of heavy work. Our benchmark tests the result is really good.

The daily performance in the day to day is more than sufficient enough, but nothing exceptional. The Snapdragon 808 is made up of two processors for performance and four for power saving, and that's more than enough for most tasks. We already saw it in the Xiaomi Mi4C and the result was very good too.

The internal memory has 16 or 32 GB (of which 8 and 24 GB are free respectively), and the lack of input for microSD is problematic for storage on the device. So we will have to synchronize with the cloud to transfer the data periodically.

Sound and drums

The sound comes from a single speaker, placed on the front. It sounds loud, but at the same time it sounds somewhat metallic. As for the microphones, Google has not saved. The Nexus 5x has one on the bottom, one on the top, and a third on the front, making the quality very good.

The Nexus 5x's battery capacity does not impress at 2, 700 mAh. Today there are numerous smartphones (even in the intermediate category) with larger batteries. The Nexus 5x holds up to the day somewhat tightly, so we give it a fairly tight pass. Tell you that the fast charge saves you, because in less than an hour we have it at 100%, for the most foodies, indicate that it is a specific fast charge for this Nexus 5X.

Camera

The camera quality of the Nexus 5x is surprisingly good. The optimization of the images is carried out intelligently through software filters. Dynamic range is acceptable, and details are captured efficiently. In HDR shots, poorly lit areas of the image gain additional colors.

The Nexus 5x's maximum camera resolution is 12.3 megapixels. Surprisingly, it doesn't have an optical image stabilizer, but it really doesn't miss it because it lives up to the Sony Xperia Z5 and iPhone 6S.

It uses a Sony IMX377 Exmor RS sensor with a focal aperture of f / 2.0, Dual LED and always shoots in HDR, the result is incredible. Although where we have seen extraordinary performance is the night images… Also remember that it allows the recording of videos at 120 fps with Slow Motion. Now the Nexus are a prodigy in photography:).

Final words and conclusion

Nexus 5 owners were expecting a major upgrade. Its advantage over its predecessor is the best reception signal, the digital sensor of the camera and the highest security of the software.

The Nexus 5x will have Google security updates for three years. In the case of the Nexus 5, in one year the support will end, if Google keeps its promise. But this does not represent a great advantage. After the episode of the Stagefright vulnerability, other manufacturers will also begin stepping up their security updates.

The offer of good smartphones at low prices has increased a lot since the first Nexus 5. And the number of interesting extras of a Google device has been reduced to a minimum number. Only Google fans should be swayed by the Nexus 5x. For everyone else, the smartphone will seem a little insufficient.

The Nexus 5 2015 is now available in Spain. It can be purchased directly from movilesymas (on sale) for 359 euros for the 16GB version and for 399 euros for the 32GB version. While on Amazon it is found for about 450 euros approximately.
