No Man's Sky was one of the most promising games of 2016, but it was ultimately a big disappointment for failing to deliver on promises made over the months and years before. One of the big promises was a multiplayer mode, which will finally come this year.

No Man's Sky Next will offer a complete multiplayer mode

An early multiplayer implementation came to No Man's Sky with last year's Atlas Rises update, allowing players to communicate with each other as floating orbs. According to Hello Games founder Sean Murray, the game's next update, conveniently titled Next, is slated to add a full multiplayer experience to the game.

This new update is expected to hit the game on PS4 and PC on July 24, at which point the game will launch for Xbox One. Although no footage is available yet, we can probably see multiplayer in action as we get closer to the rollout of the update.

In Murray's words, players can explore the universe with their friends or stumble upon random travelers. You can help your friends stay alive or attack others to survive. The small complex shelters or colonies you build as a team will be shared for all players. Fight like a pirate or wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies. Take an extracurricular race through strange alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.

Murray said that this multiplayer functionality has undergone game testing for the past six months, the game has become a very new experience that they want the community to enjoy. Updates will continue to roll out after the arrival of Next, the developer promises to continue supporting No Man's Sky in the future.
