A few weeks ago, Austrian manufacturer and leader in the manufacture of high-end heatsinks and fans presented its new low-profile heatsink a few weeks ago: Noctua NH-L9x65, which wants to position itself in the most efficient of this range at a very contained price.

In this analysis we will test it in our laboratory. Do not miss it!

We thank Noctua for trusting the product for its analysis:

Noctua NH-L9x65

The packaging does not present any news to the recently analyzed models of Noctua. The classic compact box in navy blue, white and brown is a true flagship of the Austrian company. As it is a low-profile heatsink, the box is very compact and has a very complete bundle inside:

  • Noctua NH-L9x65 heatsink. Premium NF-A9x14 PWM fan. Noise Reduction Adapter (LNA). NT-H1 thermal compound. SecuFirm2 mounting system. Noctua Metal Case-Badge.

The heatsink has dimensions of 51 x 95 x 95 mm without fan and a weight of 340 grams. It is built with the highest quality materials: Copper for both the bases and the heat pipes, aluminum for the cooling fins plus welded joints and finally a nickel-plated base with its particular rough effect. It has a thermal cooling capacity of up to 86w, that is, it will be able to withstand an overclocked i5 and a latest generation i7 processor at full power.

This little gem comes equipped with a high precision and performance fan, it is the NF-A9x14 model that is automatically controlled by the motherboard thanks to its 4 cables (PWM). It has dimensions of 92 x 92 x 14 mm and reaches speeds from 2600 RPM up to 600 RPM, a flow power of 57.5 m³ / h and a maximum loudness of 23.6 db (A). Once we install the heatsink and the fan, we have measurements of 65 x 95 x 95 mm and weight of 413 grams.

Many of you may be wondering if we are going to have a problem with compatibility. What we have to take into account is the height of our box since although it is a low profile it has a height of 6.5 cm… both for graphics cards and RAM it has an absolute compatibility of 100%, since its compact dimensions help to install it from an ATX motherboard like the smallest domestic ITX.

In order not to have a problem and correct a model for different platforms, Noctua has opted for its general line: absolute compatibility for both Intel and AMD. I detail all the compatible platforms: Intel LGA2011-3 (Square ILM), LGA1156, LGA1155, LGA1150 & AMD AM2, AM2 +, AM3, AM3 +, FM1, FM2, FM2 + (backplate is required).

Assembly and installation

The mount doesn't differ much from the famous Noctua NH-D15 or Little Brothers. In our case we are going to install in socket 1150 on a mini-ITX motherboard. We select the back plate that incorporates four high metal pins and turn the motherboard over… we fit it into the four holes for Intel 1150. Next, we add the four rubber stops to the pins or screws that protrude from the plate base.

The kit allows us to install the support in two orientations: vertical and horizontal. Everything will depend on how we want to focus it on our box, although being an ITX motherboard the best solution is the one we offer you. We tighten the 4 screws with the tools that the kit brings us (without forcing too much).

Next we apply the NT-H1 thermal paste (one of the best on the market) on the processor, the easiest application is a grain in the center and when we install the heatsink base the thermal paste will slide down the entire surface of the processor. Next we fix the heatsink and tighten the two screws on each end.

To complete the installation we must install the fan, it is as simple as anchoring it with the two side clips and connecting the 4-pin head to the motherboard. Assembly completed in 5 minutes!

To test the real performance of the heatsink we are going to stress the best processors on the market: Intel Haswell i7-4770k with Intel Burn Tests V2. We no longer use Prime95, because it is not a reliable test, as it is outdated software.

Our tests consist of 72 uninterrupted hours of work with stock values. In this way we can observe the highest temperature peaks and the average that the heatsink reaches. We must bear in mind that when playing or using other types of software, temperatures will drop dramatically between 7 to 12ºC.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Noctua three editions of his heatsinks for Ryzen

How are we going to measure the processor temperature?

We will use the internal sensors of the processor. For that test on Intel processors we will use the CPUID HwMonitor application in its latest version. Although it is not the most reliable test of the moment, it will be our reference in all our analyzes. The ambient temperature is constant 22º.

Let's see the results obtained:

Final words and conclusion

The NH-L9x65 is a low profile heatsink with characteristics superior to the famous Noctua NH-L9. This new version incorporates a greater height and failing that a higher performance. It becomes the perfect companion for ITX motherboards as it is 100% compatible with any RAM and graphics card. It supports up to 86W of power… that is, it will hold up to a latest generation i7 and with some overclocking.

It incorporates a quality fan "NF-A9x14" that thanks to its optimization and 4-pin cable (PWM) that allows the motherboard to automatically control its speed. On its installation, it has the already tried SecuFirm2 multi-socket system for all Intel and AMD platforms that in a matter of 5 minutes allows us to have the heatsink installed in our equipment. Also note the NT-H1 thermal paste and the manufacturer's 6-year warranty on any problems.

I personally recommend this equipment for users looking to get the most out of their equipment in the most compact conditions possible. For example, an i7-4770k processor like the one in our test bench has never exceeded 52ºC at maximum performance and has always remained at the 30ºC standby… which makes it an ideal candidate. For ATX or mATX format equipment Noctua offers better solutions such as the Noctua NH-D15 or Noctua NH-U14S, but all three have the same definition: “la cream de la cream” on the market.

In short, if you are looking for a heatsink for your itx board, with quality components and excellent performance, the Noctua NH-L9x65 is the number one candidate. Its store price ranges from 43 ~ 48 euros, somewhat expensive but it assures us life insurance for our processor.
