Unboxing and description of properties

Noctua is far from a beginner when it comes to experience in thermal compounds, its products enjoy a high opinion by experts and users from all over the world, being an accomplished manufacturer of heatsinks and fans that is always one of the first options to which go if we want a quality product.

To adapt to the new demands of an increasingly complex market with more powerful CPUs, Noctua has decided to renew its entire arsenal of thermal compounds and thus remain at the top.

And we have been fortunate to be able to access the entire set of products, to see first-hand the performance of their new formulas and see their interesting news. The set that has arrived is made up of the following elements:

Each of these products comes very well packaged and protected thanks to two cardboard boxes with a good full-color image of the product in full application along with its key features written on the back with a description of use.

At the same time, we find inside each box a cardboard mold that protects and isolates the compound syringe from the sides of the box and thus avoid being affected by blows. On the part of the wipes box, we only have two divisions in which ten wipes are stored in each one, making a total of 20.

Let's take a closer look at each product.

First we will see the new update of its well-known Noctua NT-H1 paste, a compound widely used by the community thanks to its good results and price. In addition to the traditional 3.5 gram compound syringe (1.4 ml), we also have a new 10 gram (4.0 ml) syringe format for users who, like us, use a lot of this element.

With the 3.5 g syringe we will have enough for about 5 or 7 applications, depending on the CPU, and with the 10 g syringe it could reach us for about 20 being optimistic, which is not bad.

From the chemical properties of the compound we do not have too many details, the manufacturer only details that it is a non-conductive and non-corrosive compound in any type of heatsink. In addition, it has a density of 2.49 g / cm ³, which ensures good homogeneity and distribution over the entire contact surface of the CPU and heatsink.

The manufacturer claims that its thermal properties are guaranteed up to 5 years, and its operating temperature is between -50 to 110 ^o C.

We continue with the new Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste, a compound with improved capabilities compared to the NT-H1 model and designed for enthusiasts and high-performance and demanding equipment.

The availability of the product is exactly the same, in syringes of 3.5 or 10 grams, although in this case with 1.2 mm and 3.6 ml respectively. In addition to this, the purchase pack includes 3 NA-SCW1 wipes for the 3.5 gram syringe and 10 wipes for the 10 gram syringe.

The description of the product is exactly the same, although it is detailed that it is a chemically improved compound and that it also has a higher density of 2.81 g / cm ³ and that is why the capacity in ml is less than in the NT-H1. This is evident in the operating temperature range, from -50 to 200 degrees. Of course the amount of compound is somewhat less.

We have also ensured its optimal performance up to 5 years. In our test bench we will check the effectiveness of each of the compounds.

Finally, the Noctua NA-SCW1 wipes are made of fabric pre-moistened with a mixture of special detergent so that with just one of them we can completely clean the CPU and heatsink. The measurements of each of them is 150 x 120 mm.

The advantage of these wipes is that they will clean much better than paper and will not leave solid particles at the base of the chip, nor will they scratch or damage the surface of such delicate components.

Test bench and thermal performance

We now turn to what really matters, which are the thermal performance tests of these compounds. The test bench will be as follows:

We have compared the performance of these two compounds with a reference paste such as Arctic MX4. Of course with the same test bench, and subjecting it to the same stress for the same time.

The results show very similar results in all of them, highlighting the performance of the NT-H2 at high temperatures, providing up to two degrees less than the other thermal pastes. So we appreciate a notable improvement over the NT-H1, the improvement in the materials used and a higher density favor the exchange of temperatures towards the heatsink.

Final words and conclusion about Noctua NT-H1, NT-2 and NA-SCW1

Noctua has shown us an interesting range of options in terms of thermal compounds, with the introduction of 10-gram syringes and the presence of these new wipes to always facilitate something as important as the removal of old compounds. It sounds silly, but removing a hardened compound is sometimes a very difficult task simply using paper.

Regarding the tests and their results, we see an upward trajectory in terms of performance, placing your NT-H1 at the level of the MX4 and surpassing it by two degrees with your NT-H2. With this trend we could assume that, at higher temperatures, we will obtain a somewhat higher decrease in degrees with this new compound. Recall that the test bench is not at all a lot, with top brand hardware and top performance.

Finally we must talk about prices, we can find the NT-H1 compound for a price of 8 and 15 euros depending on the quantity, and the NT-H2 for a price of 13 and 25 euros. The box of wipes would cost around 8 euros. We highlight that NT-H2 includes wipes in the package, and for our part it is a highly recommended product, although somewhat high in price.
