Samsung ZNAND makes things difficult for Optane

Optane technology has a special emphasis on latency, an aspect in which it far exceeds the current NAND memory used in SSDs. Of course the competition was not going to stand idly by and if there is a giant that can stand up to Intel it is South Korea's Samsung.

Samsung is also developing a new Z-NAND memory that comes with the intention of fighting with Intel's Optane, this ZNAND is not a new memory since it is based on the NAND SLC which has been improved several features along with a new controller to improve its performance in 4K random operations, sequential operations and reduce latency which is the main advantage of Optane. This new ZNAND will offer a latency of 12-20 / 16μs that is very close to Optane's 10 / 10μs.

In a way we can say that ZNAND means returning to a performance-focused design such as the SLC that was abandoned in favor of MLC and TLC that offer a much more favorable price-performance ratio.

As we already anticipate, the first commercial product based on Z-NAND will be the new SZ985 that will come in capacities of 800 GB, this new disk offers a performance in 4K random reading of 750K IOPS that exceeds the 550K IOPS achieved by the Optane P4800X although it lags behind in writing with 175K vs. 550K IOPS. As for the performance in reading and writing sequence it surpasses the option of Intel with 3.2 GB / s vs 2.4 GB / s and 2 GB / s.
