Seagate has announced its new Nytro family SSDs. Specifically, the Nytro 1351 and 1551 models, which stand out for taking up SandForce DuraWrite technology , promising high durability rates.

Seagate Nytro, two series of extreme durability SSDs

Both SSDs work through the SATA interface, and their sequential speed will be up to 560MB / s read and 535MB / s write, on par with SATA SSD limitations. If anything, a top-performing PCIe variant (up to 3000MB / s) will arrive in early 2019 as well.

These SSDs will offer versions from 240GB to 3.84TB and the 1351 and 1551 models differ in durability with extremely high maximum writes guaranteed (Total Bytes Written or TBW), which will range from 435 to 7, 000TB on the Nytro 1351, and from 1, 300 to 21, 000TB in 1551.

To illustrate how high these numbers are, let's compare them to those offered by a mid-range consumer SATA SSD like the Samsung 860 EVO and its high-end sibling, the 860 PRO.

860 EVO (TLC 3D) 860 PRO (MLC) NYTRO 1351 (TLC 3D) NYTRO 1551 (TLC 3D)
240GB (Seagate) /

250GB (Samsung)

150TBW 300TBW 435TBW 1, 300TBW
3.84TB (Seagate) / 4TB (Samsung) 2, 400TBW 4, 800TBW 7, 000TBW 21, 000TBW

The numbers provided are surprising, and even more so when it comes to an SSD based on TLC memories, denser and therefore less durable than MLC. However, the controller would make a difference here.

Seagate has resurrected the DuraWrite technology from SandForce, which it owns. This technology is based on data reduction, that is, the driver reduces the size of the data written to flash memory, but it can be read without any compression.

According to SandForce, this increases the life of the SSD through smaller writes to the NAND, using less of it, and improving write performance without seriously affecting read.

These units have a 5 year warranty and are intended for clients such as data centers. However, they could mean the return of this technology to the consumer market, for example it could make QLC memory more 'seductive' and reduce its durability disadvantages.

This Seagate Nytro is not yet in specialized stores, we do not know if it will be but… who knows what the price is. What do you think about it?
