NVIDIA has just announced that the Pascal and Volta graphics cards will be compatible with DXR technology, which enables RayTracing acceleration in real time.

GeForce GTX series now with RayTracing support

All the details about RayTracing and the arrival on Pascal graphics cards can be seen in detail in this article published by NVIDIA.

NVIDIA engineers have been working on optimizing RayTracing for the GeForce RTX series. As a result, it was possible to enable DXR for older GPUs, such as the GTX 1080 Ti or the 6GB GTX 1060. In NVIDIA's own words, the performance of the GeForce RTX series compared to that of the GeForce GTX series is 2-3 times faster when it comes to speeding up Ray Tracing. This means that although the GTX series will now have support to be able to show and accelerate this type of effects, it will always be better to have an RTX series graphics card to obtain the best possible performance.

As we see, Ray Tracing seems to be accelerated only by FP32 cores in Pascal series, while in RTX series not only these cores are used, but also Tensor and RT cores. Therein lies the difference in performance.

The company promised to provide drivers with DXR support for Pascal and Volta graphics cards for the month of April, in which all GTX series graphics cards will be able to use Raytracing in real time. The update will be based on Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing API. What performance will the GTX series offer with RayTracing? We will know soon.
