Nvidia amp, specs, architecture and more
Table of contents:
NVIDIA's Ampere GPU has been the subject of many rumors and leaks, but today's one is arguably one of the largest we've released on this new next-gen graphics architecture.
NVIDIA Ampere will have a huge 826mm² chip
NVIDIA Ampere will have a huge 826mm² chip. Although the process node was not mentioned, such a large chip slightly increases the probability that it is an older and more mature node such as the 12nm one. However, it cannot be ruled out that it is a 7nm chip, at least, the source does not rule it out. Either way, a chip with a size of 826mm² at 7nm would be absolutely.
This is where things get interesting, however, the rumor includes a block diagram indicating improvements in architecture with NVIDIA doubling its RTX strategy. The last part is not particularly surprising since the RTX part in Turing was relatively small and limited the scale of application of RTX games.
Here is the list of improvements suggested by the rumor:
- INT32 unit remains unchanged. FP32 unit doubles for shading ratio. Doubles performance of new Tensor Core. L1 Data Cache has been improved for more complex functions. True RTX gaming architecture with new RT design Core Advanced.
The buzz doesn't end there, the tweeter has also made block diagrams of the GA103 and GA104 GPUs that would be the commercial GPUs at launch. These are the pieces supposedly for the gaming segment. The GA103 chip would end up being the hypothetical RTX 3080 Ti with about 60 SM for a total of 3840 CUDA cores. For reference, the RTX 2080 Ti has 72 SM with 4608 CUDA cores.
The performance improvement over Turing would be 50% over Turing. If NVIDIA switched to a 7nm process, it would be able to handle all of this while staying well within acceptable power thresholds. The GA103 Ampere GPU would dock with a 10GB / 20GB vRAM.
The GA104 GPU should be the replacement for the RTX 2080 (RTX 3080?) With 48 SMs (3, 072 CUDA cores based on old ratio). This is very slightly more than the RTX 2080 with 46 SMs. Along with higher performance and twice the core of RTX, once again significant performance gains are seen if this turns out to be true. According to the rumor, the RTX 3080 GPU will dock with 8GB / 16GB of vRAM and a 256-bit bus width.
