The first rumors have started to emerge about the GPU that will happen at the launch of Ampere. We know that Nvidia would be working on a new GPU architecture called Ampere and that it would arrive in 2020, but what happens further in the future? This is the information we have on Hopper architecture.

Nvidia Hopper will be the successor to the Ampere GPU with MCM design

This new GPU called Hopper is supposed to launch soon after Ampere and will consist of an incredibly powerful family of graphics cards with multiple arrays in a single package. The MCM (Multi-Chip-Module) design is the same that is beginning to be used in some of the current families of CPU processors from AMD and Intel.

It should be noted that this information is not a confirmation, rather rumors and should be taken as such.

MCM (Multi-Chip-Module) design

In theory, it should work better in all respects for GPUs that are parallel devices than for CPUs that are serial devices. A single huge die has good performance, but is expensive to produce and generally has high wastage on your wafers. Conversely, multiple chips that add up to the same die size would offer greater performance increases, would be cheaper to produce, and less waste would be produced in wafer manufacturing.

Moving from a 484mm² mid-size GPU to an MCM design results in a 7.6% performance gain with much less waste. In another example, for an 815mm² mid-size GPU, an MCM design results in an 11% performance gain with much less waste. Data that can be extracted using the Silicon Edge tool.

Nvidia is perfectly capable of creating an MCM-based GPU, which will use a 7nm node, and would even reap significant performance benefits if it decided to use it for Hopper GPUs. We will keep you informed.
