Nvidia wants to block amd's rx 3080 with a new trademark

The next AMD graphics cards are rumored to use the 3000 nomenclature just like Ryzen processors, such as the hypothetical RX 3080. AMD would not only pair both products (CPU-GPU) with a similar nomenclature, but would also use an old strategy of outperforming its rival NVIDIA by using a nomenclature superior to the RTX 2000 series.

NVIDIA wants to outshine RX 3080 and claims properties 3080, 4080 and 5080

After all, RX 3080 sounds like a 'superior' product to RTX 2080 on the shelves, though performance may say otherwise. NVIDIA wants to prevent this from happening and is already moving its tokens with recent trademark applications, claiming the properties of numbers 3080, 4080 and 5080 for future products.

AMD had already had this idea when they launched X370 motherboards, a number higher than Intel's Z270 products, so the red team wants to repeat a similar move in the graphics card segment. It is a simple marketing tactic, and it makes sense for AMD to reuse it in the graphics market.

NVIDIA doesn't have 'clean' hands in this regard either, especially if you look at the company's GeForce Partner Program (GPP). The GPP could be seen as a failed attempt to force the split between GeForce and Radeon when it came to sub-brands in third-party graphics, giving established names like ASUS ROG, MSI Gaming X and Gigabyte Aorus to Nvidia for exclusive use, leaving AMD, the smallest graphics brand without the support of these established third-party brands. Both sides have tried to mess around in the graphics card marketing game, the RX 3080 is what is probably AMD's latest trick.

During Computex 2019, AMD will give the opening speech in which they are expected to announce the new series of Navi graphics cards. We will keep you informed.
