Enthusiasts often use their graphics cards to play games, mine cryptocurrencies, and use creative tools. However, Nvidia asked them yesterday to diversify by lending that power of their GPUs to the Folding @ home projects related to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Nvidia and Folding @ home want the power of graphics cards to find a cure for Coronavirus
What is Folding @ home? Its organizers describe it as “a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, drug computational design, and other types of molecular dynamics” on its official website.
Enthusiasts can help Folding @ home "find cures for diseases like cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's, Huntington's, the flu, and many others . " All they have to do is download the Windows application from the project and then let it run in the background.
The project began working on ways to leverage its GPU network to aid in researching a cure for COVID-19 on March 10. Two days later, PCMasterRace creator "PEDRO19" encouraged Reddit users to contribute to Folding @ home's COVID-19 projects.
Nvidia then lent its support to those efforts. "PC gamers, let's put those GPUs to work, " he said. "Join us and our friends at @OfficialPCMR to support Folding @ home and donate the computing power of the unused GPU to fight COVID-19!"

People should not be overly concerned that Folding @ home software affects the performance of their system. The software can be customized to use a specific amount of power - or only to function when the system is idle - with just a few clicks.
The goal is to reach one million PCs by donating that computing power. At the time of this writing, there are more than 100, 000 PCs running for the Folding @ Home program, and there are versions for Windows, Mac, and various Linux distributions.
