Nvidia volta would use the process at 12nm finfet of tsmc

A new DigiTimes report has come to light saying that TSMC has received a new order to manufacture high-performance chips from Nvidia and Qualcomm, the world's two giants of PC graphics cards and smartphone processors respectively.

Nvidia Volta at 12nm?

The report mentions chips for artificial intelligence applications, with this it could be talking about various possibilities. The first possibility is that it is the new top-of-the-range GPU based on the Volta graphics architecture, the GV100. The second possibility is that it is the Xavier SoC that we have already talked about previously. As for Qualcomm, nothing in particular seems to have been mentioned.

We would not be surprised if Nvidia wanted to make the jump to 12nm for its new graphics cards based on Volta. Its current generation Pascal has given very good results using a 16nm process that is very mature but at the same time outdated. so it is time to look further. AMD has already been ahead in this regard with its Polaris manufactured by Global Foundries at 14nm and Vega will also use the same process.

AMD's roadmap is very promising for the high-performance sector, with Vega and Navi using HBM2 memory and focused on greatly improving energy efficiency, so Nvidia should not be trusted and surely they are thinking about how they can make Volta an even better product to avoid possible complications in the future. Nvidia enjoys an important leadership in energy efficiency, but it has already been shown several times that you cannot rest on your laurels because your rivals can surprise you, Nvidia is very smart and knows that AMD is a great rival that cannot be underestimated, because you run the risk of receiving a lunge that you did not expect.
