Optane SSD 900P promises speeds never seen before

Intel Optane SSD 900P is now available for sale, offering a small revolution when it comes to reading and writing data, being specially designed for the most professional market, which requires intensive use of the disk for a wide variety of tasks, such as video editing.

Upgrading traditional NAND-based SSDs was made possible by a new type of memory called 3D XPoint, which was jointly built by Intel and Micron.

3D XPoint memory was launched as the next step in non-volatile storage and will ultimately deliver a thousand times faster performance at switch speed than NAND-based SSDs. In fact, 3D Xpoint is so fast that it would approach the speeds that current RAM has, so imagine the benefits that this type of units can bring as soon as they are standardized in the future.

Intel Optane SSD 900P is sold in two models

The first is a PCIe x4 Gen 3 version with 280GB and 480GB capacities. The 280GB drive is priced at $ 389, while the 480GB version is priced at $ 699.

The second is a 2.5-inch U.2 drive with a 280GB capacity, which costs $ 389.

Both drives have a sequential read speed of 2.5 GBps and a sequential write speed of 2 GBps. The 4K random read speed is rated at 550, 000 IOPS, while the 4K random write speed is rated at 500, 000 IOPs. Latency is rated at less than 10 microseconds.

Intel commented that the Optane SSD 900P can also improve the performance of workstations up to 4 times. But for consumers, the biggest impact seems to be in games designed to take advantage of Optane.
