In this article I explain my reasons why I like compact mechanical keyboards, and especially a TKL format keyboard. And is that if you spend a lot of time typing on your PC, you may have a good keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are comfortable to type on, have deeper key travel, more feedback, and more key spacing than membrane keyboards.
Despite all their virtues, they have the drawback, they are bulky and contain keys that you will probably never use. Fortunately, today it is possible to find a multitude of mechanical keyboards in a compact format, which eliminates some of its drawbacks in terms of dimensions and weight.

Why I prefer a TKL keyboard over the other formats
A TKL mechanical keyboard has essentially the same design as a full keyboard, with its dedicated letters, numbers, modifiers, and arrow keys, plus some navigation keys. The only difference is that the number pad on the right has been removed, which is actually redundant because we already have the numbers at the top, so we're not really missing any features. There are even more compact keyboards, such as the 75% or 60% that eliminate more keys to achieve an even smaller design. Despite this, these compact keyboards do not sacrifice any functionality either.
We recommend reading our article on The best keyboards for PC (Mechanical, membrane and wireless)
Much smaller
The least-used keys and function row are hidden behind a function layer, so pressing Fn and the 1 key, for example, is F1, while pressing Fn plus the up arrow key is Page Feed.. A 75% keyboard includes an additional row of function keys on top. The result is a keyboard that offers all the functionality of a tenkeyless but much smaller in dimensions, which is great.
More table space
These compact keyboards are ideal, because they free up a large amount of space on the desktop, which we can use to slide the mouse more comfortably, for example. Another advantage is that both hands are much closer than with a full-format keyboard, resulting in a more natural position and more ergonomics when using the PC for long sessions. The truth is that as soon as I tried my first TKL keyboard, I immediately realized all the advantages that this format brings, not in vain has it become my favorite and I no longer want to use a full keyboard.
Quick adaptation
The great advantage of TKL over the 75% and 60% formats is that no adaptation period is needed, since everything is exactly the same as on a full-format keyboard. This means that we can access all the usual keyboard functions without having to resort to key combinations, something that does not happen in 75% and 60% and that can make using it quite uncomfortable at first, especially if you do not have time to adapt because you can't slow down.
Opt for Cherry switches whenever you can
I recommend Cherry switches, the keyboards that mount them are somewhat more expensive than those based on technology from Outemu or Kailh, but the experience of use is superior as is their durability. Another great option is the Gateron, which I have not personally tried, but my colleagues speak highly of them. In any case, it is not necessary to go to a keyboard for 150 euros to have Cherry switches, since more and more keyboards are seen below 100 euros with this type of switch. In any case, if you are going to type for many hours each day, it is worth spending a little more to give your fingers what they deserve.
