One of the world's largest manufacturers is launching the Alienware Area-51 with the new Threadripper 1950X processor. This team with a quite particular design was received by LinusTechTips , who has been able to perform some synthetic and gaming performance tests.

Threadripper 1950X - Rise of the Tomb Raider Benchmarks, 3DMark, Cinebench

Four different systems were used for the tests in the comparison: X399, X299, X370 and Z270. The same Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti graphics card was used on all systems, but memory was slower on the Threadripper system compared to X299, X370, and Z270.

In the first and only reference in games, I use the Rise of the Tomb Raider, where the Threadripper fails to stand out above the rest, in this particular game the 16 cores are not decisive. Performance is better than Ryzen X370 system, but it was even slower than Z270 and X299 configurations.

At Cinebench R15 the Threadripper engineering sample was replaced with a retail version they received with the review kit, and the performance was better, above the 3000 points seen in this graph. The Threadripper feels in its sauce with this test and the use of all the cores.

In 3DMark we see something similar than in Rise of the Tomb Raider, where we see the general scores of Fire Strike Ultra, Time Spy and Time Spy CPU. It is clearly seen that the Threadripper is not a processor to play, but for other tasks, at least for the moment since current games do not seem to take advantage of so many cores.
