The Kirin 980 processor reveals some of its most interesting technical details

According to sources in China, the maximum clock speed of the Kirin 980 will be 2.8 GHz, for its four powerful cores based on the ARM Cortex A77 architecture. These cores will be accompanied by a Cortex A55 quad-core cluster, with much higher energy efficiency, to extend battery life by reducing power consumption in less demanding tasks.

This new Kirin 980 processor will be manufactured using TSMC's 7nm FinFET manufacturing process, which will enable a high level of performance to be achieved while keeping power consumption low. This processor will have advanced AI functions, capable of up to 5 trillion calculations per watt, something that could be possible thanks to Cambricorn technology, although this is not certain.

Speculation also suggests a HiSilicon-designed GPU to stray away from ARM Mali's designs, this new GPU is expected to be 1.5 times faster than the Adreno 630 that is currently being used with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845. Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro would be the first terminals based on this Kirin 980, they are expected to be launched at the end of the year or at least announced.
