Qnap has announced the availability of the beta version of its new and improved NAS operating system, the QTS 4.2. The new firmware retains all the innovative functionalities and ease of use that characterized the previous version, and also offers more useful applications to improve the multimedia experience at home for home users and productivity at work for professional users. With a revamped user interface and many exciting new features, the QTS 4.2 offers smarter, smoother cloud storage management with increased security.

Revamped user interface with a 'flat' design

Incorporating a flat design, the redesigned QTS reduces load times and enhances the user experience with a translucent access window, frameless media viewer and a new recycle bin.

Refined multimedia experience

The QTS 4.2 turns a QNAP NAS into a multi-zone multimedia system that allows users to centrally control multimedia streaming to different areas from a single device via HDMI, DLNA, Chromecast, Apple TV, Bluetooth and devices. USB.

The revamped Photo Station offers an excellent browsing experience, with gallery and management modes, a convenient control menu bar, and improved mechanisms for file sharing.

The Video Station now has online subtitle search. The HD Station is now multilingual and supports multitasking at the same time with new applications like Skype, Libre Office and Plex Home Theater.

Storage management and optimized cloud backups

QNAP Storage Manager adds a useful snapshot tool for volume / LUN backup and restore. In addition, several enhancements have been included in the QTS to increase efficiency and professional performance, such as SSD cache acceleration, JBOD chassis roaming and comprehensive cloud backup solutions, and more.

The File Station application adds remote connection functionality allowing users to search and transfer files directly between their QNAP NAS and public cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft onedrive, Box, Yandex Disk and Amazon Cloud Drive; and create shared folders from a remote NAS to a local NAS via FTP, CIFS / SMB and WebDAV. The File Station now also supports file previewing in Google Docs and Office online and incorporates more sharing options to make file management flexible and easy.

For professional environments, QTS 4.2 has more applications and utilities that help increase productivity and security in storage management. Introduce an industry-leading hybrid virtualization solution with the Virtualization Station and Container Station applications. The enhanced Virtualization Station embraces software-defined networking concepts and brings greater benefits for flexible networking, cost-effectiveness, and unlimited potential for broader application scenarios. The new Container Station exclusively integrates LXC and Docker lightweight virtualization technologies, allowing users to operate multiple isolated Linux systems on a QNAP NAS, as well as download applications from the integrated Docker Hub Registry.

Various security mechanisms have also been added to ensure data security including 2-step verification, shared folder encryption, immediate notifications to mobile devices, and VPN server with L2TP / IPsec support.

QTS 4.2 enables professional users to centrally connect, view and manage multiple NAS with the myQNAPcloud service, which now offers a new panel for previewing files with Google Docs and Office Online, and uploading files by drag and drop to increase efficiency at work. File sharing through the cloud is made more secure with the myQNAPcloud ID control and by purchasing myQNAPcloud SSL certificates.

Also included in the Beta, Qsirch is a powerful full-text search tool that helps users quickly find files on a QNAP NAS, while Qsync adds a central configuration mode that allows users to directly manage user privileges., configure Qsync client settings, and apply custom / default settings to all devices at once from one device.
