- Conclusion about which MSI board to buy me
Deciding which MSI board to buy from me is not a simple task, MSI is one of the brands that has the most number of board variants available. Special models for gaming, enthusiast, mid-range, etc. All of them with different specifications and different purposes and design. In this article we will help you understand how its hierarchy of plates works and we will recommend the best models.
Index of contents
MSI offers the user a very complete range of motherboards to choose from. In addition, it is a fundamental task to know which is the chipset that we must choose and the platform, AMD or Intel since it will be this that will determine which processor to buy.
Intel and AMD: between them will be your processor
And the truth is that it is worth first giving a brief review to the manufacturers of processors, since, as we have said, they will determine the socket platform of our motherboard.
Intel is the most powerful manufacturer when it comes to processors. Both by number of models and by power, Intel has the most powerful processors for desktop PCs (at least until the Ryzen 3000 arrives). Above all, in gaming, it is where its performance stands out, with the Intel Core i5, i7 and i9. But it also has processors suitable for design and megatasking, its X and XE series and multimedia miniPCs with its Gold and Celeron series. The current platforms, and that we are interested in from Intel, are the following:
- LGA 1151 socket: This socket is the most widespread, since all Intel Core i3, i5, i7, i9, Celeron and Pentium Gold processors are installed for general-purpose desktops and gaming. We are currently in the 8th and 9th generation, the 6th and 7th require another version of the current 1151 socket. LGA 2066 Socket: This socket is the largest, although it is true that it is also for desktops, it is much more oriented to Workstation and mega-task where it requires a huge processing capacity for rendering, design and high volume of work..
For its part, AMD has much cheaper processors than Intel, we are talking about almost half the price. Since the AMD Ryzen appeared, the manufacturer has retaken much of the market, being CPUs with a performance very similar to those of Intel. It has lines oriented to gaming with Ryzen 3, 5 and 7, multimedia with Athlon and the Workstation and megatasking with the Threadripper. In addition, it now has its first 7nm Ryzen CPUs with performances that exceed the best Intel processors. The current platforms are:
- PGA AM4 Socket - This is the socket intended for virtually all AMD series except Threadripper. In addition, it is a platform compatible with all generations of Ryzen CPUs on the market, including the new Ryzen 3000. This makes our board valid for many years. PGA TR4 Socket - Intended for AMD Threadripper only, a large socket for Workstation computers where processing power is paramount.
Hierarchy and naming of MSI motherboards
In the case of MSI boards, their nomenclature is not as complex as for example laptops, but it is worth knowing what each element means in order to be able to place ourselves in our preferences.
This could be a rough summary of the elements that make up the name of an MSI motherboard, we must be flexible with the names of the subfamilies, since there are many variants with small modifications that incorporate labels such as EDGE, PLUS, Pro, etc. Basically they distinguish the range and the version by which the manufacturer is.
Starting with the families, the MSI manufacturer distinguishes a total of 6 of them. In the first three that are cited, the badge will appear in the name of the plate, while in the other three they do not appear as such, but are directly divided into subfamilies.
- MPG (Modish Performance Gaming): Gaming- oriented boards with high customization and expandability MEG (Maximum Excellent Guiding): Gaming boards with cooling improvements and high expandability MAG (Metallic Arsenal Ground): Gaming boards with metallic Gaming appearance Enthusiast and Gaming Arsenal: They're also chipset-oriented gaming boards suitable for unlocked CPUs, usually from previous generations. Gaming Arsenal: mid-range boards and general purpose, but always with Pro gaming design : they are boards oriented for professional use, in most cases they are locked chipsets and not as powerful as the gaming series
As for the chipsets, we can obviously distinguish between the manufacturers Intel and AMD as well as whether or not they are unlocked to overclock:
- Unlocked Intel Chipset: Z390, Z370, Z270, X299, X99 Locked Intel Chipset: H370, B360, H310, H270, B250, B150 Unlocked AMD Chipsets: X570, X470, X370, B550, B450, B350 Locked AMD Chipset: A320
In addition, if behind the name of the chipset it has the character "I" it will mean that the board is ITX size, and if it is "M", then it will be Micro-ATX size. Please note that all X299 and X399 chipset boards are E-ATX size.
And finally we have the last naming code that will correspond to connectivity. It is not a fixed rule, but all boards that have " AC " means that they have high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity included. In any case, there are models that do not have "AC" and also have it.
Once we know a little better how you name your MSI boards, let's see the most important families and the main characteristics of the models we recommend.
MSI MEG GODLIKE: the best performance of the brand
If we want a motherboard that gives us the best features, then we have to go to the MEG Godlike series from MSI. These models are built and oriented towards top of the range gaming configurations. They are boards with powerful VRM to withstand aggressive overclocking processes to the highest possible stability. Similarly, the Taiwanese manufacturer has made the most of the possibilities of the available chipsets to offer the best possible connectivity, both in expansion, network and peripherals.
MSI MEG Z390 GODLIKE is a stunningly designed motherboard with XL-size aluminum heatsinks in the colossal 18-phase VRM, chipset, and three M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots. It comes packed with RGB lighting in different areas, but most importantly it supports a total of 128GB of DDR4-4600 MHz RAM and 2-way Nvidia SLI Multi-GPU and 4-way AMD CrossFire configurations.
The product also includes a PCI card with two extra M.2 slots and another Streaming Boost expansion card. Quality details such as full network connectivity with dual Killer E2500 dual-chip wired LAN interface and Wi-Fi connectivity with Killer 1550 are the reasons why this brand is ranked as the best on the Z390 platform. Remember that this board does not have video connectors, so a dedicated graphics card will be mandatory.
MSI MEG Z390 GODLIKE - Enthusiast Motherboard (LGA 1151, 4 x PCI-E x16, M.2 SHIELD FROZR, 6 x USB 3.1 Gen2, Wireless-AC 1550, Xtreme Audio DAC, Core Boost)- M.2 SHIELD FROZR: thermal solution for your M.2MEG devices: Including a dynamic panel that indicates the status of GODLIKE and shows your own personalityCORE BOOST: A premium and fully digital power design to support more cores and offer better performanceXTREME AUDIO DAC: Isolated audio with ESS DAC, 2 Audio Processors and Nahimic to provide the highest quality sound MYSTIC LIGHT INFINITY: Personalize your PC with 16.8 million colors and 17 led effects
The great news is that now this series has increased with a new motherboard for the AMD X570 chipset, which will debut units in July with the incorporation of 3rd generation Ryzen processors at 7 mn. The other chipset available will be the Intel Z390 for its more powerful 8th and 9th generation processors. This board is even more impressive than the previous one, since the X570 is a more powerful chipset and which supports PCIe 4.0, in this case through 4 slots that also support Multi-GPU.
The VRM has increased to 14 + 4 + 1 new generation phases with a complete system of heatsinks that combine between VRM, M.2 and chipset, which has a fan. It is prepared to support 128 GB of RAM and has three M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. Network connectivity has improved with dual chip Killer E2500 and now Wi-Fi 6 of up to 2, 400 Mbps. It includes an expansion card with two M.2 PCIe 4.0 slots and another PCIe 10 Gigabit / s card.
MSI MEG ACE: high performance for gaming
The ACE family is also one of the most acclaimed for demanding players, although it is slightly behind the previous ones, both in terms of performance and obviously in price. There are currently only two models available, for the Intel Z390 platform and for the new Ryzen with X570 chipset when available.
These boards do not renounce an aggressive aesthetic with powerful heatsinks or a connectivity worthy of the high-end with LAN + Wi-Fi, but a little more trimmed and oriented to somewhat tighter budgets. They present a great overclocking capacity as demonstrated by the MSI MEG Z390 ACE that we analyzed a while ago in Professional Review, with an entire i9-9900K at 5 GHz without any problem.
The star model for Intel is precisely the one we have already discussed. A board in this case without heatsinks in all three M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, but with RGB lighting in the I / O panel protector. The VRM is reduced to 13 phases, as well as the RAM capacity up to 64 GB (officially) at 4500 MHz. Its three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots support 3-way CrossFire and 2-way SLI configurations. And in this case we only have a Killer E2500 LAN chip and that, Wi-Fi AC with Killer 1550. Please note that in this series we do not have integrated video connectors.
MSI MEG Z390 ACE Review in Spanish
MSI MEG Z390 ACE - Enthusiastic Motherboard (LGA 1151, 3 x PCI-E x16, M.2 SHIELD FROZR, 8 x USB 3.1 Gen2, Wireless-AC 9560, Audio Boost HD)- M.2 SHIELD FROZR: thermal solution for your M.2DDR4 BOOST devices with STEEL ARMOR: isolated and protected DIMM slots to provide pure signals for the best gaming performance and stability CORE BOOST: A premium and fully digital power design to support more cores and offer better performance AUDIO BOOST: Isolated audio with high quality audio processor EES DAC and Nahimic for the most immersive experience MYSTIC LIGHT INFINITY: Personalize your PC with 16.8 million colors and 17 led effects
The X570 chipset version will level up with Wi-Fi 6, dual Ethernet LAN interface, and 128GB of RAM. The new generation VRM goes up to 14 phases and of course the three PCIe x16 slots are 4.0, just like the three M.2 slots. A lot of level is expected with the new Ryzen.
MSI MPG GAMING PRO AND EDGE: versatile and with extensive multi-GPU connectivity
And if the budget is still not enough for the powerful motherboards of the MEG series, MSI have products to choose from, and now we go down another step to position ourselves in a series where we have much more variety. In fact, we find models with variants with and without Wi-Fi connectivity to adapt in the best way to pockets without losing the quality of a high-end in many of its aspects.
Unlike the previous top of the range, we also find models in ITX format to mount miniPC gaming and Micro-ATX somewhat less versatile, but with a better expandability than the ITX in general. In this series two families stand out who will be the ones we will cite. The Gaming Pro Carbon series and the Gaming EDGE series, somewhat more basic in finishes. They are ideal motherboards again for gaming and for using unlocked Intel and AMD processors, and even putting two GPUs in parallel.
Both families will increase with motherboards under the new generation AMD X570 chipset, please note that there are no models available for the X470 chipset, just as it is in the previous series.
In the Pro Carbon series there are two models in ATX format with and without Wi-Fi connectivity. The most complete model is this Gaming Pro Carbon AC, although the network chips down to a Realtek AC 9560 for Wi-Fi and an Intel I219-V for Ethernet, it is normal. We still have reinforcement in the expansion slots, with 3 PCIe 3.0 x16 that support triple GPU AMD or double Nvidia as in previous cases. And they decrease the M.2 slots to two of them, PCIe 3.0 x4, just like the rear connectivity does, now we gain DP and HDMI ports, but we lose USB ports up to a total of 5 plus one Type-C Gen2.
MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON Performance - Motherboard (LGA 1151, Twin Turbo M.2, Mystic Light RGB LED, 3 x PCI-E x16, Core Boost, M.2 SHIELD FROZR, 5 x USB 3.1 Gen2, Audio Boost 4)- TWIN TURBO M.2: With 2 M.2 slots. Running on PCI-E Gen 3, it maximizes x4 performance for NVMe SSDsM.2 SHIELD FROZR: thermal solution for your M.2CORE BOOST devices: A premium, fully digital power design to support more cores and deliver better performance DDR4 BOOST: technology Advanced to provide pure signals offering the best performance and stability MYSTIC LIGHT RGB LED: Personalize your PC with 16.8 million colors and 17 led effects
The Gaming EDGE AC board is certainly similar in many ways to the previous one, we have an identical port panel, the same sound chip and LAN, although the Wi-Fi card is an inferior model, Intel Wireless-AC 9462 somewhat slower. We don't lose RGB lighting or boost on DIMM slots, in fact the capacity of their PCIe 3.0 x16 slots is exactly the same, and VRM phases as well. So the decrease in price is mainly due to a more basic design.
Again we have versions with and without Wi-FI, with models in ATX, Micro-ATX and ITX formats. They are really recommended and unless you can afford them, they are a great choice.
MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC - Performance Motherboard (LGA 1151, Twin Turbo M.2, Mystic Light RGB LED, 3 x PCI-E x16, Core Boost, 3 x USB 3.1 Gen2, Wireless-AC 9462, Audio Boost 4)- TWIN TURBO M.2: With 2 M.2 slots. Running on PCI-E Gen 3, it maximizes x4 performance for NVMe SSDs, DRDR4 BOOST - advanced technology to provide pure signals offering the best performance and stability - EXTENDED HEATSINK DESIGN - Extended PWM and improved circuit design to ensure that even the highest-end processors Run at top speed AUDIO BOOST 4: Isolated audio with high quality audio processor EES DAC and Nahimic for the most immersive experience MYSTIC LIGHT RGB LED: Customize your PC with 16.8 million colors and 17 led effects
MSI MAG TOMAHAWK and MORTAR: are the gaming boards with military design
We continue with a series very loved by users and already entering very attractive prices, around 100 - 150 euros approximately. This series currently has two motherboards, one of them being Micro-ATX format. At the moment we don't know if the range will increase with the new AMD chipset, so we only have Z390 as the Intel platform.
They are characterized by a military design, with aluminum sinks simulating steel and nicknames with names of missiles and army artillery. We should not confuse these two boards with the rest of the members in the Arsenal gaming series, since they are specific versions located in the high range, while the others are rather in the mid-range.
Both boards feature a 9 phase power VRM with acceptable overclocking capability for unlocked CPUs. However, if we really want an overclocking of 5 GHz or more, for example in an i9-9900K, we do not recommend these boards as they are somewhat short.
MSI MAG Z390 Tomahawk Review in Spanish
For us, the best option, and that we also brought you your review, is the MSI MAG Z390 Tomahawk, which supports 64 GB DDR4-4400 MHz and which mounts 3 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, although it only supports 2-way CrossFire. In storage it has a good level, with two M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots and an included heatsink, along with 6 SATA.
A good detail of MSI is to incorporate two wired network interfaces with Intel I219-V and Intel I211-AT GbE both, yes, without Wi-Fi connectivity as you will understand. The sound card is also a bit more basic and we left the Realtek 1200 series behind, to stay in the Realtek ALC892. The I / O panel is not bad, with 6 USB ports of which 3 of them are 3.1 Gen2 and another Type-C Gen2.
MSI MAG Z390 TOMAHAWK - Arsenal Motherboard (LGA 1151, 3 x PCI-E x16, M.2 Shield FROZR, Dual Intel LAN, Core Boost, 4 x USB 3.1 Gen2, DDR4 Boost, Multi-GPU)- M.2 SHIELD FROZR: thermal solution for your M.2DDR4 BOOST devices: advanced technology to provide pure signals offering the best performance and stability CORE BOOST: A premium and fully digital power design to support more cores and offer better MULTI-GPU performance: with Steel Armor on your PCI to protect them, supports 2-Way AMD CossfireDUAL INTEL LAN: for Intranet and Internet, offering you a smoother gaming experience and more effective connections

MSI Arsenal GAMING: mid-range oriented motherboards on Intel and AMD platforms
We left behind the three main series to place ourselves in a much more populated range of motherboards and chipset and increase the possibilities on which MSI motherboard to buy from me, because if a user is looking for a good quality motherboard with a chipset other than Z390, X570 or X299, you are in the right place. In fact, we have chipsets for other generations of both Intel and AMD.
A clear example is the B450, an AMD chipset that is below the X470 but still allows overclocking on Ryzen CPUs of the three generations. And the same goes for the Intel B360 chipset, also mid-range, although for blocked Intel CPUs. So for a user who does not expect to overclock and thereby save money on CPU and board, this series is perhaps the most interesting.
Something to consider is we do not have AMD X470 chipset boards, since these are located halfway between the MEG series and the Pro series a little in no man's land. In any case, it should be noted that we will find cheaper models for the Intel X299 platform, and practically all sizes available.
And a highly recommended board is precisely the MSI X299 Tomahawk Arctic, an economical version for the Intel Workstation that we ourselves analyze. It supports 128 GB of DDR4-4133 MHz memory and we can make Nvidia SLI and AMD CrossFire without any problem thanks to the 4 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots it has. It has a very nice completely white design along with its large 9-phase VRM suitable for Intel i9 processors, although the top range is somewhat large.
Very good motherboard for a gaming or high-end content creation with high-power GPU capacity, although perhaps it lacks Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.

Without a doubt, other of the most recommended here are the Mortar, specifically the B360 chipset for Intel and B450 for AMD, ideal for mounting mid-range gaming equipment by investing in more powerful GPUs. In addition, they are Micro-ATX boards that are very easy to install and that take up little space.
These boards support 64 GB DDR4 without problem, and in the case of the AMD version it supports Multi-GPU and overclocking. Both have dual M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot and Realtek ALC892 sound card. Of course, they do not have Wi-Fi connectivity, although for 90 euros we can not order the complete pack either.
MSI B450M Mortar Titanium - Motherboard (AM4, AMD B450, 1 x PCI-E 3.0 x16 Slot + 1 x PCE-E 2.0 x16, DDR4 up to 3466 MHz, HMDI, 4 x SATA 6Gb / s)- Mystic Light and Mystic Light Sync - Personalize your PC with up to 16.8 Million Colors Extended Heatsink - With more cores, power and thermal design is more important to ensure the temperature stays low Audio Boost 4 - High quality isolated audio with HIFIDDR4 Boost processor - advanced technology to provide pure signals for greater stability Core Boost - optimized power and trace design to support more cores and better performance

MSI PRO Series: wide variety of chipsets for all generations
We go down one more step on which MSI motherboard to buy and in the Pro series we will find practically everything, including chipsets for Intel X299 Workstation and motherboard compatible with practically any CPU from a few years ago.
Perhaps the most outstanding differential element with respect to the Arsenal series, is that the design is not the most important thing, since indeed, we have beautiful plates, but visibly more basic than in the other families. For this reason, their prices almost never exceed 100 euros. And we really found very interesting products, even with Intel Z390 chipset.
Who are these plates for? Well, clearly for users who do not want to overclock, and who also do not mind having a more basic design board, and without capacity for parallel graphics cards, although there are also.
Surely there are many interesting boards here, especially if you have a 6th or 7th generation CPU and Ryzen, but a very interesting one is the MSI Z390-A Pro. It sacrifices design and certain features, but in fact supports RAM memory of up to 4400 MHz and AMD 2-way CrossFire. It only has one M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot though .
Or even the MSI B450-A Pro, a board for AMD Ryzen also with capacity for 3466 MHz RAM and that the brand recommends for cryptocurrency mining thanks to the Multi-GPU capacity and its 4 PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. We have an M.2 slot, Realtek ALC892 sound card and up to 6 USB.

Surely you have wondered where are the motherboards with AMD X470 chipset? Well, we will have to look for them in the gaming series of MSI plates, in fact, they are great design plates that could perfectly be placed in the medium and high range, since we have models from the Gaming Pro Carbon series for example, although without the last name MAG.
To understand it quickly, in the gaming series we have boards that, without going into the MPG, MAG and MEG series, have optimal performance for Ryzen gaming equipment especially, and Intel of previous generations, we do not refer to Z370 and Z270 chipsets. In this case we will only place current chipset plates, each one can search for the specific model in the manufacturer's list.
And of course, the role will be taken by the MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon AC board, basically the AMD version of the Intel Carbon AC. A very similar design and with RGB lighting that supports 3466 MHz RAM. It supports Multi-GPU for AMD and Nvidia and has a dual M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. Being "AC" we also have good level AC Wi-Fi and Realtek ALC1220 sound card. In short, the best MSI motherboard for AMD X470.

MSI Creation, XPower and SLI Plus range: for Workstation equipment
To finish this list, the range tops for the Intel and AMD Workstation platforms could not be missing either, we are talking about X299 and X399 for Intel Core X and XE processors and AMD Threadripper.
Undoubtedly, the Creation range stands out as top stops, along with XPower and SLI Plus as somewhat more relaxed versions. For the top-of-the-range model, the MSI MEG X299 Creation includes two PCIe expansion cards, one for dual Thunderbolt 3 and dual DP connectivity and one with two extra M.2s. Similarly, the MSI MEG X399 Creation board includes only the dual M.2 card.
MSI Meg X299 Creation Intel S2066 7C06-001R- Full protective sleeve to protect connections and design. The three 8-pin power connectors provide enough power for multi-core CPU performance. Improved Core Boost processor thanks to its sophisticated design and digital power design.

The most outstanding MSI technologies for your boards
And together with the motherboards, MSI introduces its own technology in the manufacturing components, and not only lighting but also optimizations for networks, VRM etc. Let's see the most outstanding ones to familiarize ourselves.
MSI Mystic Light
By now everyone will know about MSI's lighting technology. It is basically the implementation of LED lamps capable of reproducing a 24-bit color gamut, that is, 16.8 million colors. The Mystic Light system has the advantage of being manageable from the software with the same brand name from the operating system or the BIOS. In addition, it is capable of synchronizing with other compatible devices such as peripherals or graphics cards, and with RGB headers located on the motherboard.
Core BOOST and DDR4 BOOST
They are MSI's own solutions to provide the highest quality and management of the bus that communicates the processor as the RAM memory. Thanks to utilities integrated in the BIOS like OC LAB with a few clicks or automatically, the board chooses which XMP profile or what frequency is ideal for RAM and CPU memory.
MSI Zero Forzr
This is MSI's own cooling system for the different elements of the boards and other products such as graphics cards. MSI uses high-performance aluminum heatsinks to keep the temperatures of M.2 units , power phases, and chipsets under control. When the system has fans, the Frozr technology is responsible for managing their RPM through PWM, turning them off in low work processes or increasing RPM in high stress jobs.
