There are a lot of users who are thinking of making the leap to the third generation of Ryzen processors to update their equipment or to build a whole new computer. However, as it was released relatively recently, there are a number of limitations that make some AMD 400/300 series motherboards not recommended. That's right, not all motherboards from the current X570, X470, B450, X370 and B350 series are compatible with all Ryzen 3000 processors, as evidenced by this compatibility chart which has been posted on reddit.

The compatibility table mentions the Ryzen 5 3600X / 3600, Ryzen 7 3800X / 3700X, Ryzen 9 3900 and Ryzen 9 3950X processors, the latter has not yet been released. The table divides the models into 4 colors.

If we talk about the new X570 motherboards, as expected, all the motherboards do not present any problem with the Ryzen 3000 series, with the exception of the Gigabyte X570 Gaming X. In this case, there are no compatibility problems at the BIOS level, or anything similar, but the problem exists with the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X processor, which makes this motherboard work to the limit of its possibilities.

What they recommend is to improve the air flow of the box to avoid problems of overheating of the VRM phases. The motherboard has active cooling, but it would not be enough, so if possible, avoid this motherboard if you plan to buy a Ryzen 3950X in the future and opt for another alternative with X570.

The same case for Gaming X happens with the MSI MPG 570 Gaming Edge and Gaming Edge WiFi motherboards, as well as the X570-A Pro. All of them with problems to support 100% the power of the Ryzen 9 3950X.

X470 / B450

A common denominator of almost all motherboards of this generation X470 / B450, is that the creator of the table warns that none are recommended for use with the Ryzen 9 3950X 16-core processor. However, this does not mean that they do not work, according to comments on reddit, but that it would not work well, especially when applying OC.

In the case of X470 / B450 chipset motherboards, the only ones that are ready for the 3950X are the ASRock X470 Taichi, ASUS Rog Crosshair VII Hero, ROG Strix X470 F Gaming, BIOSTAR X470GT8, Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7 Wi-Fi and the MSI Gaming M7 AC / Gaming Pro Carbon. The rest would not be recommended.

If we talk about the Ryzen 9 3900X, it is more of the same, but here the table warns that most motherboards would work, but only by improving the air flow or adding active cooling in the VRM phases. All the motherboards mentioned above would have no problems with this processor, of course, but they add the ASUS Prime X470-Pro, the ROG Strix B-450 I-Gaming, and X470 I-Gaming. We would also add to the MSI X470 Gaming Plus and Pro, and those B450-A Pro, B450 Gaming Plus, B450M Gaming Plus, B450 Tomahawk, B450 Gaming Pro Carbon and the B450I Gaming Plus.

A special mention needs to be made for a motherboard, which is the ASRock B450M HDV R4.0, a motherboard that is hardly recommended with almost any Ryzen 3000 series chip, and which has issues even with the modest Ryzen 5 3600X / 3600.

The conclusion we can draw is that, if you are going to opt for processors like the Ryzen 9, look for motherboards that come with a good amount of VRM phases and active cooling.

X370 / B350

These older generation motherboards can still mostly be with the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors, but by no means with a 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X, with a few spectacular exceptions such as the ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Professional Gaming and X370 Taichi.. ASUS has its own too, with the excellent ROG Crosshair VI Extreme, ROG Crosshair VI Hero and ROG Strix X370-F Gaming. The only BIOSTAR board that the 16-core Ryzen 9 can run smoothly is the Racing X370GT7.

Still, by improving the cooling part in the VRM phases, a Gigabyte Aorus AX370 Gaming 5 and K7 could work with such a processor, the ASUS Prime X370-Pro is also mentioned.

More of the same with the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X, although there are more options here, especially if we look at the ASUS side of the table.

Conclusions

Ryzen 7 3800X / 3700X and Ryzen 5 3600X / 3600, as we see in the table, are compatible with most of the current and older motherboards on the market, but not all. The biggest problem that arises is overheating in the VRM phases. So we see problems with motherboards such as the Prime B450M-A and B450M-K from ASUS, or the B450M Pro-M2 and M2 V2 that have problems in the phases even with the modest Ryzen 5.

If we go further, on the X370 / B450 motherboards, the ASRock AB350M HDV models in all their variants have problems with the Ryzen 3000 series. Also the ASUS Prime B350M (A, E and K). Gigabyte is also not spared with motherboards like the AB350M D3V, DS2 and HD3.

Finally, and we repeat, if you have some of the motherboards marked in red in this table, it does not mean that it will not work with a specific Ryzen (Zen 2) processor. It could work perhaps limiting the operating frequencies, but that would not be the most recommended option, since it would not take advantage of all the power it can offer.
