The new 16GB Samsung LPDDR5 RAMs are already here and will be used by many of the manufacturers for their new premium smartphones. Production will begin in 2020 after having already started with the 12 GB modules, allowing higher performance for AI and 5G in addition to better energy efficiency.

Samsung LPDDR5 RAM will be 1.3 times faster than LPDDR4X and 20% more efficient

As usually happens in a new generation, the decrease in the size of transistors leads to better performance and lower consumption, something fundamental in mobile phones. Xiaomi has been one of the first manufacturers to implement LPDDR5 modules in its new Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro, being in this case 8 and 12 GB of the first generation.

Now Samsung plans to raise the size to 16GB, a natural and normal step in the new generation. These modules will reach transfer rates of no less than 5500 Mbps (Megabits per second), while the LPDDR4X did so at 4266 Mbps. But surely the most interesting thing is that a 16 GB module of the new standard consumes 20% less than an 8 GB LPDDR4X, being a huge step forward in effectiveness and efficiency.

Samsung's new LPDDR5 chip pack features 8 chips running at 12 Gigabits and another 4 at 8 Gb, all with a 10nm manufacturing process. It is still the same size as many LPDD4X modules, but the internal array has been substantially improved and optimized. These modules will begin to use from now, for example with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 offering a variant of 16 GB. It is expected that these first versions that implement LPDDR5 16 GB will appear with a somewhat higher price, it is in any case normal to release a new standard and the increase from 12 to 16 GB.

But the brand's timeline does not stop here, since in the second half of the year it expects to start mass-producing third-generation 16GB and 10nm modules that will increase transfer rates to 6400 Mbps. This mass production is expected to take place at its Pyeongtaek factory.

Technology advances and 16GB terminals in the high and premium range will be the general trend in 2020, especially in the second half when manufacturers such as Samsung itself, introduce flagships in the final stretch. Technologies such as 5G, 120 Hz displays, and sensors of 108 MP and more also demand more and more power.

Are you planning to buy yourself a 5G phone with DDR5?
