The new range of Razer products includes this Razer Basilisk Essential, a mouse that maintains the same ergonomic design as the Basilisk top model and also the peculiar and useful side button to have a total of 7 programmable buttons. An indicated FPS gaming mouse, with new rubber grips, 6.4000 DPI optical sensor and Razer Chroma lighting.

If anything sets Razer products apart they are their gaming capabilities, and we look forward to hearing if this new Basilisk is up to scratch.

It never hurts to thank Razer for the transfer of the product and for their trust in us and in our analyzes.

Razer Basilisk Essential technical features

Unboxing and design

This new Razer Basilisk Essential has the accurate ergonomic design of the normal Razer Basilisk, albeit with included rubber grip, and the best thing about being a cheaper mouse. This is mainly due to its more basic and lower performance optical sensor, as we will see later.

Razer Basilisk Essential comes to us in a very small flexible cardboard box, as is usual for this type of peripherals. Obviously there is no lack of a great color photo seen from above the mouse and with the Razer Chroma lighting activated.

Inside, we find the mouse inserted in a cardboard mold and in turn wrapped in a polythene foam bag for added protection. In its interior we will find the following accessories:

  • Razer Basilisk Essential Mouse User Guide Detachable side button trigger

So we see that this Essential version also includes the great detail of the peculiar side trigger of the normal Razer Basalisk.

Razer Basilisk Essential we can place it as a mid-range mouse, although in the eyes of the brand, it will be one of its basic products. We say this, because in itself it is a very balanced mouse with a good design and finishes. We must consider that there is a large list of lower cost mice that will be those that really occupy the low desire, not being the case of the Bassilisk Essential.

We appreciate at a glance that the design is virtually identical to its older brother, something very successful in our opinion. But also the brand has included in this model some ribbed rubber side grips for a better grip. We will go into details in the next section.

It is not a small mouse we must say, since its measurements are 124 mm long, 75 mm wide and 43 mm high, so, at first glance, it is a mouse suitable for medium and large hands, ideal for palm and claw grip. But it also lowers the weight of its predecessor to 95 grams to emerge as a serious option for FPS games.

We begin this time by observing its upper area, where the most common mouse buttons will be placed. Razer Basilisk Essential has Razer mechanical switches with Hyperesponse function and also programmable in its 7 buttons. This is noticeable just by pressing them, with a very light click and with the main buttons of very little travel for greater reaction speed.

In this upper area we find a single DPI button, which at the beginning comes with 5 pre-programmed DPI levels, although we can change them from Synapse 3. Similarly, we have a wheel of good dimensions and quite out of the plane with ribbed rubber on its surface, consisting of small points that generate a great grip. It has very little marked jumps and practically no sound.

The two main buttons with a capacity to last more than 20 million clicks and with quick response cannot be missing either. Each and every one of these buttons on the Razer Basilisk Essential will be customizable and programmable through macros with Synapse 3.

We go to the side area to see the rest of the buttons. In the left area we can see the two typical navigation buttons located in the central area of the mouse and with a sharp and small design so that they are not in the way of the cleft for their grip. Right in the front area, we find the hole for the installation of the button that acts as a trigger, and that gives so much personality to the Basilisk.

In the right area we only have a grooved hard rubber grip, just like the one in the other area. In general I must say that the grip is fabulous, very firm and with perfect access to all buttons.

If we place ourselves in the front and rear, we will see a better plan of the ergonomic systems of this Razer Basilisk Essential. By now, virtually everyone who has tried the Basilisk will know that it is a comfortable mouse with a well-studied design. Razer knows this and has simply carried the same technique in this version.

Mouse clearly dexterous, although with a very little drop towards the outside, and very wide main buttons and with a large pulsation surface. What stands out the most is its left side, with a huge hole to place our thumb. That is why the grip is very firm, with this finger resting on the fin under this indentation. It is perhaps one of the most comfortable mice I've ever tried for my personal taste.

We will take advantage of the bottom to talk a little more about the sensor. Razer Basilisk Essential installs an optical sensor made by Razer with a native resolution of 6, 400 dpi, which will give us good speed up to 4K resolutions. As standard they come configured with 5 DPI levels, being, 800, 1, 800, 3, 600, 5, 400 and 6, 400, we can configure it with Synapse 3 in 100 dpi steps at a time. Its polling rate is 1000 Hz, it supports speeds of 5.6 m / s and accelerations of 30 G.

For surface movement, we have three large Teflon legs, which provide fast and smooth movement. Of course 95 grams is an advantage in this case. In this regard, we must say that it does not have customization of weights of any kind.

Here we have already installed the side trigger, a button that is also customizable, but above all it will be useful in the game with different available functions: Push to Talk, leaving it pressed we can establish walkie-talkie type communication in games. Sniper mode, pressing it will slow down the dpi for precision shots. For charged attacks in games or throwing objects.

Let's not forget about its 16.8 million color Razer Chroma lighting system for the rear logo area. We can synchronize and modify its lighting thanks to Synapse 3 or directly through compatible games such as DOOM, always having the Razer software installed clearly.

Grip and movement sensitivity tests

Razer Basilisk Essential is a mouse with design and gaming features as we have seen during Unboxing. Due to its size and button location, especially the side trigger, we can say that it is compatible with the Palm Grip and Claw Grip type of grip. A hand of about 190 x 100 mm will find these two types of grip ideal. With them we will perfectly reach all the buttons and the curvature of the side slit will provide a firm grip and no escape.

In the previous photos we see that clearly with Fingertip Grip (pointed grip) we will not get to the trigger correctly, much less with a small hand. It may sound silly, but in the days I've been with this mouse, I've noticed that the rubber grip of this mouse is quite warm, and the fingers get relatively wet. Of course it is my personal experience, not a general one.

Due to the weight of the mouse and its ergonomics, it is ideal for FPS games. Its 7 programmable buttons, trigger included, will be perfect for precise control and are buttons that hinder. Obviously it is perfectly valid for any type of game, or for day-to-day work, there is no doubt. Programmable buttons and macros do not allow this without problems.

Let us now see the results obtained in the small tests to which we subject the mouse face.

  • Variance of movement: The procedure consists of putting the mouse in an enclosure of about 4-5 cm, then we move the equipment from one side to the other and at different speeds. In this way the line that we are painting in Paint will take a measure, if the lines vary in length, it will mean that it has acceleration, otherwise they will not have it. As we see in the previous image, we have absolutely no acceleration. All lines are drawn with perfect length whatever the speed. We wanted to place a fine brush to detect deviations and there have been no cases. Pixel skipping: Performing slow movements, and at different DPI in a 4K panel, the pixel jump is non-existent, both on the mat and on the wood. In this case, we have no help for sensitivity, so they are pure mouse performance. Tracking: Tests in games like DOOM or by selecting and dragging windows, the movement is correct without experiencing accidental jumps or plane changes. The previous Basilisk allows us higher speeds and accelerations, but for most users, this will more than comply. Surface performance: It has worked well on all types of surfaces, shiny as metal, glass and of course wood and mats. In this case we will not be able to modify the lift off distance of the mouse.

Synapse 3 software for Razer Basilisk Essential

Having a Razer product, it is our obligation and that of everyone to install the Synapse 3 software to take advantage of the customization possibilities. It is recommended to have it updated to its latest version so that it correctly detects this recently released Razer Basilisk Essential.

With this software we can customize almost all aspects of an average mouse. The first thing we will find is a sketch of the mouse and its different controls, by clicking on one of them we can change its function to almost anything imaginable.

We can also create macros with the built-in wizard, activate or deactivate the Hypershift function or also modify the DPI levels of the mouse.

In the Chroma section, we will have everything related to lighting. Disregarding the keyboard, we see that we will only have a lighting area for our Razer Basilisk Essential, which supports all kinds of animations, synchronization with other Razer products and its management through games, very fashionable now.

If we have a Razer mat, the least we can do is get into the surface calibration section and leave our mouse ready for battle.

In the lower area of the monitor, a pop-up window will appear indicating the DPI setting each time we select one from the button.

Final words and conclusion about Razer Basilisk Essential

This mouse will be the basic of Razer, but it surpasses many mid-range of the market. We have nothing negative to say about its optical sensor, the results are obvious that they are impeccable, only considering that both the movement capacity and the DPI are inferior to other models of the brand.

The design remains with respect to the Basilisk, if something works, I put it better to leave it, and it is what Razer has done, not only with this mouse, but also with its Razer Kraken. Perfect grip on palm and claw with very good quality plastic finishes and minimal weight. Of course, the rubber grip gives heat and makes your fingers sweat.

Being a product with Razer Chroma technology, Synapse 3 is there to help us. Its 7 buttons will be programmable and its illumination too, providing us with a wide range of options, including surface calibration. Likewise, the trigger is a very important element to consider, because this type of button is not usually found in mice in this price range.

We finish with its price and availability. We will have Razer Basilisk Essential for sale online from this March 15 and at a price of 50 euros in Europe and America. It is a very well finished and designed product, so it will be a serious option for players who want something cheap and of a good level and reliability.
