Review: kingston datatraveler locker + g3

A year ago we tested the second generation DataTraveler Locker series and the experience was very satisfying. In this third generation we have a USB 3.0 drive, more security, with hardware and device encryption with capacities from 8 GB to 64 GB with a 5-year warranty. In this review we will show you all that this small but complex flash drive offers.

The flash drive is protected in a plastic blister. We see that it has 8GB, includes the DATA TRAVELER LOCKER + G3 protection certification, is compatible with both Windows and MAC operating systems and offers a 5-year warranty. Note that all its technical characteristics are described on the back.

The DataTraveler Locker + G3 stands out for its elegant design with a drop and shock resistant metal casing and measured dimensions: 60.56mm x 18.6mm x 9.75mm. It incorporates a key ring to be able to always carry our protected personal documents and the cap fits perfectly to make it easy to avoid getting lost.

The connection has been upgraded to USB 3.0 and boasts more speeds than the previous generation with DTLPG3. Larger storage devices have read speeds of up to 135MB / s and write speeds of up to 40MB / s. Although Kingston has sent us the most basic 8GB and we have a rate of 80 MB / s read and 10 MB / s write.

Without the need to install any application, DataTraveler Locker + G3 is easy to configure and use, since all the necessary software and security systems are already incorporated. It works on both Windows and Mac systems, so users can access their files from various systems without having to install a program on each of the computers they use.

Once explained how it works and although it seems a silly question (it is not): Can files be run from memory without the need of a key?

The answer is no. The pendrive comes with a small partition of about 10 Mb that includes the executable that decrypts the drive, and it is only accessible through the key. In Windows operating systems, the key request is automatically opened, while the MAC OSX system has to open the key program of the USB key.

Kingston has improved in small brushstrokes to the excellent to his DataTraveler Locker + G3 pendrive with USB 3.0 connection, better read and write rates and keeping what was really going well: design, portability, security and durability.

For those of you who have read the analysis, tell us that it has a system via hardware that encrypts our information using a password. Every time we want to access our removable storage device, it will ask us for a password, while MAC OSX system we have to open the pendrive key program. In our tests it has matched with a reading of 86 MB / s in reading and 33.56 MB / s in sequential in its simplest version, the 8GB. If we buy the 32 or 64GB we will have a rate of 135MB / s read, 40MB / s write which are great.

Without forgetting that we can synchronize our data with the different clouds: Dropbox, Amazon, OneDrive and Google Drive. Good job!

In short, it is a product that far exceeds all the expectations I had about it and is a sure value for our data. Its price ranges from € 12 (8GB) to € 60 (64GB).
