QNAP QGenie

A package of very small dimensions and with a very minimalist presentation comes into our hands. On the cover we have an image of the QGenie, some large letters and the seven services that this Portable NAS can offer us. Already on the back we have the quick specifications in 12 different languages.

Once we open the box we find:

  • NAS QGenie.USB Cable.Quick Guide.

The first thing we see that the white design and black screen impresses, and that is that it gives it a Premium touch. It has compact measurements such as a mobile phone: 15 x 58.5 x 17.5 mm and weighs just 120 grams. Inside we find a MIPS 24KEc 600MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, 16MB of internal memory for the system, 32GB of memory on an SSD and a Wi-Fi 802.11n connection at 150Mbps.

The back is aluminum reminding many of the Apple format of their Ipod.

Both on the upper side and on the left side there are no buttons or slots. In the lower area we have a USB 3.0 connector (allows us to expand the memory of the equipment) and a RJ45 Gigabit LAN connection. While on the right side we have: on / off button, battery information button, SD card and USB connection for PC.

I'm still in love with this design…. somewhat thick but it is that just thinking that we carry all the encrypted documentation, with a multitude of connections and configurations seems to me a real past.

As we see in the following images, the QGenie tells us on its OLED screen how much battery we have left, if the device is synchronized with the network, the name on the network, free capacity, etc… What a blast!

Software and first impressions

Those of you who have been reading my reviews of QNAP NAS systems have already told you about the benefits of the operating system and the software of this brand. Being an unusual system, we have only two applications available so far, the first is the Qfinder, which is a utility that allows us to search for our device and access it easily by simply connecting it to the network and thus being able to configure it.

The second application is the QSync application that allows us to synchronize files at any time and automatically backups selectively. It also allows us to share files and folders as if it were a SAMBA server.

Final words and conclusion

The taste of the QNAP QGenie has been fantastic first because of its small size (15 x 58.5 x 17.5 mm) and light weight, that is, we can carry it as a mobile in our pants or our travel bag. It is really powerful with a single-core processor of 600 mhz, 64MB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory SSD, SD, USB connections and a screen that tells us all the necessary information about the system. Its compatibility with operating systems is outstanding with both Windows, Linux, Android and Mac is fantastic, recognizing it first in all of them.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Asus MG248Q Review (Full Review)

You can connect up to 20 users and use the same services up to a maximum of 8 users simultaneously, all through the wireless 802.11n wired or wireless network connection. This last aspect is the one that should improve in new revisions, since the 802.11 “N” connection is no longer the most modern and at this point it is mandatory to have 802.11 “AC” so take advantage of all the broadband of our mid-range router /high.

Regarding the included Software, we find the Qfinder to search for the NAS, Qsync to synchronize files and QFile for Android, all using the WPA / WPA2 / WEP protocols in crepitation.

Its availability is quite scarce in Spain although we have seen it listed in an online store for € 155 put at home. Taking into account the marked price, it seems to me a very good option, for all the features it offers us.

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

+ PORTABILITY - COULD BRING WIFI AC CONNECTION.

+ GOOD MATERIALS

- A JACK OUTPUT COULD GIVE US THE OPTION OF MP3.

+ AESTHETICS

+ MANY CONNECTIONS.

+ ALLOWS US TO CHARGE OUR SMARPTHONE / PDA...

For its impressive aesthetics, portability and novelty, we awarded it the gold medal:
