Shuttle launched its “Barebone” SH87R6 and SZ87R6 computers at the end of the year with a reduced size, compatible with high-end Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors, allowing us to install up to 32 GB of RAM and a dedicated dual SLOT graphics card PCI Express 3.0 to x16.
On this occasion I have analyzed the SZ87R6 the top of the range of this factor of the German manufacturer, where the finishes and the quality of components are exquisite. Want to know more about her? Keep reading our review.

Shuttle SZ87R6
Shuttle sends us the SZ87R6 in a cardboard box with a reduced size and quite minimalist as we are used to. For transportation includes a handle. We have little to highlight about its outer packaging except that on the side we have a label with all the characteristics of it.
Once we opened the box we found ourselves protected with anti-shock foam and all the documentation and accessories (wiring, hardware) in a plastic bag with a hermetic seal.
The bundle is made up of:
- Barebone Shuttle SZ87R6.Instruction manual.Quick assembly guide.Power cable.Protection for socket.Heat paste.CD with drivers and software.Tornilleria.2 SATAS cables.
The barebone has very small dimensions 216 x 332 x 198 mm and weighs less than 2kg. Its design reminds us of the models previously analyzed with an internal steel chassis and brushed aluminum exterior. On the front we find the possibility of inserting an optical drive and a card reader in the second 5.25 ”bay. Note that it has 2 USB 3.0 ports, audio input and output and another 2 USB ports but this time 2.0. In addition to the power button and power LEDs and hard drives.
Both sides include micro-perforations for good circulation of the hot air generated inside the cabinet.
Once we go to the back we find that the power supply is small when we see that small fan and the outlet. A zone that we see the heatsink, 2 expansion PCIe SLOTS, and all the rear connectors:
- DVI and HDMI output. 4 USB 2.0.2 rear USB. ESATA connection. 7.1 audio connection.
It is time to remove the cover, it is as simple as unscrewing the 3 screws.
At first glance we see that the cables are already organized, it incorporates an ITX format motherboard (expected) and we only need to add RAM, processor and hard drives to make it work. Regarding the cooling system, it is a heatsink with 4 aluminum heatpipes, with a copper base and accompanied by a 12 cm fan with a consumption of 0.41 amps. The exact model is the AVC DS09225R12HP207 with PWM connection.
The power supply is a 500W Shuttle codenamed PC6311005. The only downside that I see that it has a reduced format and I do not like that much. In case of breakdown we should send the whole team…
Among the characteristics of the motherboard we find what any other can offer us in the market: USB 3.0 connection, USB 2.0, head for sound card, PCI Express 3.0, 4 sockets for DDR3 memory and compatibility with Intel Haswell processors of the socket 1150. The sound card is a Realtek ALC892. For PCI connections we find a PCI Express 3.0 port to x16 and another x1. We have connected a high-end graphics card such as the GTX780. In storage it allows us to connect up to 4 SATA 3.0 hard drives at 6Bbp / s and an mSATA connection.
Finally, we show you an image of your classic BIOS without UEFI support.

conclusion
Shuttle SZ87R6 is a computer with very compact measurements in Barebone format. Many years ago it was the perfect kit until they brought out ITX boards and custom boxes, but the SZ87R6 has nothing to envy these custom setups. As standard, it includes a powerful power supply, a semi-passive heatsink, an aluminum frame and a very good quality motherboard. We simply must install a processor, ram memory, graphics card and a hard drive to make it work.
To test its performance I have used a high-end computer with an i7-4770k processor, 16 GB of RAM at 2400 mhz, a GTX780 graphics card and a 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD. The results have been as good as those of a team in ATX format without sinning in energy efficiency and stability.
Where we find a little noise is the power supply by incorporating a fan less than 120 mm and in maximum performance it works at more revolutions than usual. If shuttle improves on its new revisions and models with a power supply with a higher range fan it will be the ultimate barebone.
