Details of Intel's 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop CPU have begun to leak online. The latest details from the Chinese PTT PC forums reveal that Rocket Lake-S will introduce a couple of changes compared to the 10th generation Comet Lake-S processors coming next year.

Rocket Lake-S to replace Comet Lake-S generation

The details are very interesting considering that we did not have much information, apart from knowing that they will be made with a 14nm node. The Rocket Lake-S CPU family is expected to hit the main desktop platform in 2021 and will be the 11th generation family, replacing the 10th generation Comet Lake-S product line. Furthermore, this will be the latest generation of Intel chips before making the jump to 7nm.

Rocket Lake is expected to feature U and S series processors, but we will only focus on the S series, which is aimed at the main desktop platform. So for starters, the rumor says that the Rocket Lake-S family will have up to 8 cores and a 125W TDP. This is two cores less than the Comet Lake-S family that would offer 10 cores with a 125W TDP. Rocket Lake-S also includes AVX-256 and non-AVX-512 like the 10nm Ice Lake or Tiger Lake family. There is also DDR4 support for native speeds of up to 3733 MHz (32 GB) and 2933 MHz (128 GB).

The most significant detail is that the Rocket Lake-S family is expected to incorporate the Gen 12 architecture. Intel Gen 12 GPUs are based on the Xe GPU architecture, which will also appear on Tiger Lake CPUs. The new CPU has 32 UE units, compared to the 48 UE units of Comet Lake-S processors. The difference is that Comet Lake-S CPUs still have the oldest Gen 9 GPU architecture, while Rocket Lake has a Gen 12 Xe GPU.

It will be interesting to see what Rocket Lake-S can do to keep Intel relying on a 14nm node in 2021. By that time, AMD would already have to market its Zen 4-based Ryzen processors with an improved 7nm node..
