Samsung has launched a new generation of SSDs for small and medium-sized businesses that will be sold through online retailers. Most of these new models are related to existing business SSDs, like the PM883, which have only been available to OEMs and larger customers.

Samsung renews its business SSD offering

At the bottom of the new product stack is the 860 DCT SATA, which is based on the consumer 860 EVO SSD and therefore lacks power loss protection, but the firmware is tuned for sustained sustained performance without SLC write cache. The 860 DCT is designed for cost-sensitive use cases, such as content delivery networks that have very slow workloads, and do not require the additional guarantees of data integrity provided by protection against power loss.

We recommend reading our post on Samsung 960 EVO vs Samsung 970 EVO. Is the change worth it?

883 DCT is Samsung's new high-end SATA drive, based on the PM883 introduced earlier this year. This disc has power loss protection and a more typical write resistance rating of 0.8 DWPD. The main NVMe product in the new family is the 983 DCT, based on the combination of TLC NAND memory from the previous two, and the Phoenix controller (3, 000 / 1, 900 MB / s) that also powers the 970 PRO and 970 consumer SSDs. EVO. The 983 DCT features substantially higher performance than the 883 DCT SATA, but it comes with the same 0.8 DWPD write resistance rating. The 983 DCT will be available in M.2 22110 format or as a 2.5 "U.2 7mm thick.

Finally, the new 983 ZET finally brings Samsung's Z-NAND technology to a broader audience. The 983 ZET has much higher write performance than the 983 DCT, and is rated for up to 10 DWPDs. Low latency remains a key selling point for Z-NAND. The 983 ZET will be available as a PCIe add-in card, although a future M.2 version based on the SZ983 would not be surprising.
