It's no secret that Samsung has a different treatment for their smartphones, flagship models get three years of software support, while mid-range models get just two years. That means the 2016 Galaxy A3, J1, and J3 will no longer receive security updates this year.

Samsung withdraws support for 2016 Galaxy A3, J1 and J3 models

Samsung has updated its Android security updates page by removing those models from the list, indicating that the company has ended support for those devices.

On the other hand, four new devices have been added that are the Galaxy A8, Galaxy A8 +, Galaxy J2 and Galaxy Tab Active2 from this year 2018. Of all these, only the Galaxy A8 model receives monthly security updates, while the Galaxy A8 + has been added to the list of quarterly security updates as well as the Galaxy J2 and Galaxy Tab Active2.

This decision by Samsung to withdraw software support for 2016 models points to an undesirable aspect in the Android ecosystem, the shortest period of support for mid-range smartphones.

This will leave many users exposed to possible security problems, which can be seen as a measure to force the jump to more updated models. Of course, the community will always be behind to try to do the work that Samsung doesn't want to do anymore.
